SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Georgia Power has agreed to purchase electricity created by burning methane gas at a Savannah landfill.
The company estimates the 10-year agreement with Waste Management Renewable Energy LLC will provide enough electricity to power roughly 1,600 households in Georgia. The agreement was filed with state regulators this week and still requires their approval.
Microorganisms at the landfill produce methane gas as they break down organic material, such as food scraps. That methane gas is then trapped and burned to power turbines that produce electricity at the Superior Landfill and Recycling Center.
