EDGEFIELD CTY, S.C.---A discovery of an open pit dumping site in Edgefield County is raising some questions today.

It is near JET Middle School and photos show electronics, light bulbs, paint, and classroom equipment in the large pit.

The facilities manager for the school district says it has been used for
five years as a fire pit, to destroy old and unused items. However, the manager says intruders may be dumping things there illegally.

The dump was brought to the attention of tthe Sheriff's office and the
South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. DHEC
is responsible for making sure that landfills meet legal requirements.
