WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal investigators say a company managing South Carolina's Savannah River Site nuclear complex altered its 2007 financial audit to justify expenses to the government.

The Energy Department's Inspector General says in a report released Wednesday that as a result, it cannot verify some $1.4 billion in expenses submitted by the Washington Savannah River Company that year.

The report says the company was supposed to conduct independent self-audits.

Instead, the report says it allowed managers to work closely with auditors to eliminate discrepancies. The company lost its management contract last year.

The company has disputed parts of the report but officials were not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
