AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW) - The CSRA is blessed with successful cancer treatment facilities in South Carolina and Georgia. However, with gas, lodging and food, not all women can afford to make the trip every day for therapy. That's where The Lydia Project steps in.
Candye Smith is back to her giving ways, this time surprising The Lydia Project, giving back to a group people who dedicate life to helping others.
"We like to say that these bedrooms are saving lives," Michele Canchola, Executive Director at The Lydia Project, says. "It's making treatment accessible and getting closer to treatment."
From supportive letters to financial help to lodging, the charity provides services from women currently in treatment for any type of cancer.
That's why Give it 4ward's Candye Smith decided it was the perfect place for her next sneaky surprise. Thanks to Augusta Sportswear. Candye donated 2,000 tote bags.
Canchola says the bags will be perfect for packing donated quilts and sewing kits, making life much easier for the volunteers.
"We're thrilled," Canchola said. "That's not in our budget so it's the little things that make it more special."
The Lydia Project receives hundreds of calls a week from women looking for help. The charity is always looking for volunteers so they encourage everyone to help. They accept people of all ages. Volunteers can work from home, online or at the house.
