Give it 4Ward: School bus heroes

May 9, 2010

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Two quick-thinking elementary students who saved an ill bus driver were honored with the latest installment of Candye Smith's Give it 4ward.

The Family Y, an Augusta commissioner and local stores all partnered to make this one of the largest surprises yet.

"Here we go again. You never know," Candye says as she gets ready.

Xavier Harris and Jennila Denson were the two who sprung into action and didn't hesitate to radio for help

"If I would not have thought what I did or did what I did, my bus driver probably would have died," Xavier said.

"Really, what I felt like I was just saving my mom or something like that," Jennila said.

"It's remarkable. I'm amazed that they weren't scared or frightened," Teri Maas with the Augusta Family Y said.

That's why the Family Y is treating the kids to a three month visit that comes complete with free reign of the water park. But that's just the beginning.

"I called everybody and I said this is what we are gonna do. Are you in or out?" Candye said.

"I mean it just makes me so proud, I wouldn't miss it," said Commissioner Bill Lockett at the ceremony on Tuesday.

"I didn't realize there was an agency or service in the community that did such wonderful things...or even thought that way," said Dr, Verma Curtis, principal of Wheeless Road Elementary.

The concept is simple to Candye.

"There are good things going on in the community and you don't have to always hear about the bad stuff," she says.

Leave it to a woman named Candye to bring something sweet to news.
