AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Alex Townsend paid $63 the last time he filled up his truck with gas.

"Trying to find a way to cut corners," he said. "We all are."

He's found his way for 15 years -- riding a bike to and from work. He lives about two miles away. So he probably pays these high gas prices a lot less than you do. Prices now nearing $3.50 in both Georgia and South Carolina.

"We have some kind of control over it," he said. "My control is, I ride to work, I shoot for about 100 days a year."

That's two to three times per week. During one year he rode to and from work 148 times. But he'll take a little sweat, because he's not sweating what he saves -- hundreds of dollars.

"Always nice to have that extra cash in your pocket, and it's nice to pedal by the gas stations."

Others are trying what's called "ridesharing." It's basically carpooling but sometimes with strangers. People use websites like Craigslist and eRideShare to ask for rides or offer them. Some want to reduce expenses. Posters give their work schedules. Others offer to take turns driving or pay fuel costs.
