GVW brownfields job training program

The GVW Brownfields Job Training Program will open the doors of opportunity. Dozens of people will have new jobs and a better future. The training is all about going green and revitalizing the Graniteville, Vaucluse and Warrenville area. The best part is that all the training is free.

Edward Davis IV says, "it would be better if they do something here...so everyone won't be struggling." Edward is struggling financially, but the program could change things for him. Those who get accepted will get training at Aiken Tech. There will be four different cycles with 16 students in each--the first starting this October. The goal is to have people get on-hands training. Aiken Tech will teach students how to test air, water, and soil for pollutants and to deal with mold, lead and asbestos. They'll also be certified to do a number of "green jobs." The Warren Mill will be the first hands-on training and students will learn how to remove asbestos.

Lasima Turmon, the project coordinator, says
"it will really help people get much needed skills and they will become more valuable to an employer...this is the first of many steps to get Granitville to where it use to be, to revitalize the area." Edward is excited about the possiblities, "it would really help make something out here....There's a lot of potential in these buildings..they just need to be cleaned out.
Creating new jobs and restoring Brownfield sites that may have contaminants is key to creating a better area. It's a "first come, first serve" process, but preference is given to those who live in the Graniteville, Vaucluse, and Warrenville areas. The application must be complete and you must meet all of the qualitifications.
