Want to be a smart shopper? Make sure to look in your grocery store's sale paper for deals and discounts!
-Buy pre-bagged items like apples, oranges and potatoes (individual pieces are expensive).
-Buy in season! Be aware that produce can be extremely expensive if it is not its normal growing season). Examples: grapes, blueberries, strawberries.
-Buy whole! Avoid pre-cut fruits or vegetables, which are more costly. Buy whole and cut them yourself at home instead.
-Cheapest pick: Bananas coming in around $0.19 per pound.
-Quick tip: Be aware that certain colors of bell pepper are more expensive than others.
-Choose canned peaches, pears, fruit cocktail or applesauce.
-Pick “canned in 100% juice or water” and “no sugar added.”
-Choose canned beans, peas, tomatoes, corn or pumpkin.
-Look for low sodium or no salt added products.
-Choose frozen versions of fruits and vegetables that perish quickly (blackberries, strawberries, raspberries).
-Buy in bulk. You can buy large bags since they last a long time in the freezer.
-Dried fruits like raisins have a longer shelf life and last longer than fresh ones.
-Dried fruits can be expensive; purchase them when they are on sale.
Fresh juice can be very expensive. Try getting cans of juice concentrate and mixing it yourself at home. Make sure to choose the cans that say “100% fruit juice concentrate."
