Now I know we don’t really want to go around doing everything with disease prevention in mind. But this time of the year everything does begin to turn pink to increase breast cancer awareness and taking steps to prevent breast or any cancer is always wise.

Here are just a few suggestions of things to include in your grocery cart to help boost your antioxidant intake and potentially decrease cancer risk.

Eat more fruits and vegetables specifically:

  • Berries: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. If they are not in season, consider frozen vegetables.
  • Apples: YES, apples (I have mentioned their value before as I consider them an under-appreciated fruit). However, they have a high antioxidant content that even rivals some of the “super-fruits” like goji berries, pomegranate juice and red grapes.
  • Cruciferous vegetables: Always include some cruciferous vegetables in your cart. Cruciferous vegetables include: cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower (try this roasted it is delicious cooked that way), brussels sprouts, collards, arugula, turnips, rutabaga, mustard-greens and radishes.

Include more whole grains:

  • Choose whole grain loaf bread.
  • Use brown rice or for a change try the more exotic black and red rice varieties.
  • Try quinoa or the more exotic red quinoa.
  • Of course, try the many whole grain pastas. In addition, many pastas are now being made with multiple grains like oat flour, legume flour and quinoa flour.

The bottom line is to eat an overall healthy diet. Certainly no ONE food or nutrient is the answer to all our health concerns and that is the beauty of a varied diet. You can eat many different wholesome foods to create a diet high in flavor, fiber, nutrients and moderately low in fat, sugar and salt!
