EWWK: New Food Review

Once a month or so, I like to check the grocery store for relatively healthy new foods. Sometimes (especially when I am talking about produce), the product I want to highlight is not available.

That was the case a week ago and so I am re-visiting new foods to highlight the “brown tomato." I love it and want you to know about it, so here is one more round of “new foods." Enjoy!

Kumato by Sunet:
It is a brownish tomato with a delicious sweet flavor -- sweeter than the traditional tomato because of a higher fructose content. I call this a “try it and you’ll like it food” because I am not real fond of tomatoes, but love these. Just so you know, these are not organic but they are also not genetically modified and originated in the Spanish Mediterranean and now are grown from France to Canada. Luckily for us, they have found their way to the American market. So try it -- you’ll like it.

Cara Cara Oranges:
One word for this is delicious. The Cara Cara orange is characterized by a flesh color ranging from pink to deep red. In flavor it is sweet and low in acid. It was developed accidentally perhaps as a cross of orange varietals, but this is not known with complete certainty. You can take my word for it, though, that they are delicious! Oh, and did I mention they are seedless AND easy to peel? Perfect for kiddos and adults!

La Croix Sparkling Water:
Water should be our beverage of choice of course, but sometimes you want a bit of flavoring. What I love about the La Croix sparkling water is that it comes in flavors and is sodium and sweetener free. The added carbonation makes it more soda like so a nice switch if you are trying to cut soda consumption.

California Olive Oil:
There is nothing new about olive oil, what IS new is the fact the growing olive oil industry in California. Less than 2 percent of the olive oil that is consumed in the U.S. is produced here, but that is beginning to change. So save a little money and buy domestic -- you will not be disappointed!

Hopefully this list has inspired you to try some delicious, healthy, new foods. Until next time: Eat well, live well!
