Frozen Breakfast

Fitting breakfast into a busy schedule? Check out the frozen food aisle.

Normally I suggest the least processed food option as the most nutritional option. much But we all get in a morning crunch (in fact I saw a pop tart box on the counter this morning so I know my husband was running out the door and grabbed the first thing he could find). Now don’t judge me because I have pop tarts in the house (they were on sale and I too have weak moments).

Okay, so if you find you have hurried mornings sometimes the freezer section can be a reasonable place to find a breakfast option. I love freezer foods because you can buy them on sale and they have a long shelf (freezer) life. Other benefits of breakfast from the freezer include:

• Portion Control (many of them are single serving)
• Quick and Easy
• Curb your hunger later in the day (by just eating breakfast vs. skipping)

So in case you want to avoid the mad dash to the car with pop tart in hand here are some healthier breakfast items to look for in the freezer aisle.

- Kashi Go Lean Strawberry Flax
2 waffles: 160 calories, 3g fat, 6g fiber, 300mg sodium
- Amy’s Organic Steel-Cut Hot Cereal Bowl
220 calories, 3.5g fat, 5g fiber, 190mg sodium
- Smart Ones Stuffed Breakfast Sandwich
240 calories, 7g fat, 3g fiber, 580mg sodium
- Lean Pockets Sausage, Egg, and Cheese
280 calories, 8g fat, 2g fiber, 700mg sodium (a bit high in sodium)
- Jimmy Dean D-Lights Turkey Sausage Bowl
230 calories, 7g fat, 5g fiber, 540mg sodium
- Amy’s Breakfast Burrito
250 calories, 7g fat, 5gfiber, 540mg sodium
- Morning Star Farms “Sausage” Patty
(Use this to make your own breakfast sandwich)
80 calories, 3g fat, <1g fiber, 250mg sodium

The bottom line: Try not to eat breakfast out of the freezer every morning, get a variety of foods in your diet. Watch out for sodium, if you eat out of the freezer often aim for items with less than 500mg sodium per serving. Pair your frozen meal with a piece of fruit, 100% fruit juice or reduced fat/skim milk to complete your breakfast.

To set the record straight a traditional workday breakfast for both my husband and I is whole wheat toast or English muffin, fruit and coffee. It is important to practice what I preach and I do so most of the time. However perfect we are not and I am happy to report we now have a frozen organic steel-cut oat breakfast bowl waiting for my husbands next hurried morning.
