How did cake mix made it to the new product review? Surely cake mix itself is not a new product. Well, I realized as I was preparing an Eating Well with Kim recipe using cake mix that while the label says "0 trans fat", most cake mixes have partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredient list. This indicates that there is at least some and possibly up to 0.5g trans fat per serving. There is no way to tell exactly how much or how little by reading the label.

I can’t go around promoting recipes with trans fat, so I had to go right back to the store for some investigative shopping. I found two cake mixes that were trans fat free.

Private Selection®: All Natural Vanilla Bean Cake Mix: This product can be found in the baking aisle alongside all the other cake mixes. What makes this product special is not what it has but what it does NOT have. This cake mix does not have trans fat! Private Selection Cake Mix comes in three flavors: molten lava, double chocolate, and vanilla bean.

Dr. Oetker Organic Cake Mix: This product can be found in the organic section of the grocery store. This product also does not have trans fat. Dr. Oetker cake mixes come in four flavors: vanilla, chocolate, lemon, and marble.

Bottom Line: Cake is a food to be eaten in moderation, but choosing a cake mix with no trans fat is always a great idea. Look for more cake mixes to follow suit and take the trans fat out.

I love the Private Selection Cake Mixes, but in Memphis they were pulled off the shelves and recalled about 6 months ago. I haven't been able to get any info on why the recall and when they will be back!

Cherrybrook Kitchen also has trans fat free and gluten free chocolate cake mix. They also sell cookie mix, fudge brownie mix, and vanilla frosting. (All 100% gluten, trans fat, egg, dairy, and nut free) You can find it at Fresh Market! Very yummy!
