As a whole the grocery industry introduces approximately 15,000 new products a year. Only 25% of new products remain in the store for more than 3 months.

Here is a sampling of products that have recently hit the market and are nutritionally improved and may be worth taking home.

New Products Featuring Produce

Melissa’s®: Baby beets: This is a great product that can be found in the produce section of your grocery store. These beets are peeled, steamed and ready to eat. That means convenience AND no mess. They come in an 8 ounce package and will keep for 1-2 months in your refrigerator depending on the sell by date. They are great in a salad or warmed up as a colorful side dish.

Nutrients per serving: Calories 40, Fat 0g, Sodium 30mg, Carbohydrate 10g, Fiber 2g, Protein 1g.

Bottom Line: Stock up on some today!

Ore Ida® Steam and Mash™Sweet Potatoes: This handy product can be found in the freezer section of the grocery store. I love using fresh foods whenever possible; however I also like to keep a few vegetables in the freezer to help me out when the week is a busy one. These sweet potatoes will fit the bill nicely; they are low in both fat and sodium.

Nutrients per serving: Calories 90, Fat 0g, Sodium 30mg, Carbohydrate 20g, Fiber 3g, Protein 1g. They are also an excellent source of vitamin A.
Bottom Line: Stock up on some today!

New Products for Snacking

Smartfood® Popcorn clusters: Come in 3 varieties—Chocolate Cookie Caramel Pecan, Honey Multigrain and Cranberry Almond. These snacks sound wonderful and come in portion control packages. Typically portion controlled packaging costs more but if that helps limit your snacking it may be worth the extra cost.

Nutrients per serving: Calories 110 -120 calories, and contain 1-2 g fat per serving. They also contain a nice 5g of fiber (pretty good for a snack). Some of the fiber in this snack comes from inulin (derived from chicory root). It will help you increase your fiber intake but may or may not have the same benefits as obtaining fiber from whole grains.

Bottom Line: A nice flavorful treat that will easily fit into a healthy diet, and cost as well as packaging help to limit portions.

Quaker® Tortillaz™: These air baked rice and corn crisps provide a punch of flavor in their powdered flavoring that comes in two varieties: Zesty Guacamole, and Cheesy Nacho. They are packaged in a 3 ounce package (1 ounce is a serving).

Nutrients per serving: Calories130, Fat 4g (0.5g saturated fat) Sodium 200mg, Fiber 1g, Carbohydrate 21, Protein 2g

Bottom Line: Nice flavor with less fat than traditional flavored chips. A good treat when you want that crunchy salty snack. However, maintain caution with portions…it would be super easy to eat the whole bag in one sitting (pre-portion this one to avoid eating the whole bag which would give you 1/3 of your sodium for the day).
