While it is easy to find a healthy tomato-based sauce, it is difficult to find a pesto or Alfredo sauce that meets low fat or “healthy” guidelines...unless, of course, you make them yourself. In addition, remember our friend portion control? Well, a portion or serving of Alfredo sauce or pesto is 1/4 cup, unlike tomato sauce, which is 1/2 cup.
Alfredo sauce does come in light varieties, and in my experience, some are better than others. My favorite variety is the Buitoni light in the refrigerator section (next to the refrigerated pasta).
I have not seen a low fat version of pesto locally, but I do keep checking, because pesto adds such a wonderful fresh flavor to pasta and pasta dishes.
One of my favorite tricks for using pesto or Alfredo sauce in moderation is to add a little water to the sauce and mix it together prior to adding it to the pasta. This will help “a little go a long way”.
