Augusta, GA--- A South Carolina congressman was in town Tuesday, touring Augusta's medical facilities.

Congressman Joe Wilson (R)-SC, joined candidate-for-congress Jim Whitehead, and both men talked about a collaborative effort that could soon mean Augusta offering the gold standard of care to more wounded warriors.

Congressman Wilson represents South Carolina's 2nd district, but he crossed the Savannah River to show regional support for caring for the wounded warrior. It was an opportunity for Congressman Wilson and Mr. Whitehead to tour the nation's only active duty rehab within a VA facility.

There the men met Staff Sgt. Calvin Wilson who was injured in Iraq. He told them the Active Duty Rehab is helping him. "They're rehabbing my leg, and I just started walking 3 or 4 weeks ago," he said inside the unit. Staff Sgt. Wilson was in Iraq on a mission, in the lead vehicle, when he was hit with a roadside bomb. He lost movement in his leg, but the Uptown VA Active Duty Rehab is helping him get it back, one step at a time.

Dave Jones is a recreational therapist assistant at the VA's ADRU, and he says Augusta has been more than generous in helping the wounded warrior. "In our community, there's not a lot we need to ask for, this community has found a need to come forward and supply our soldiers," Jones said.

It's a caring response that Congressman Wilson is joining candidate Whitehead in promoting. Whitehead said "We're touring the VA medical facility and taking back a first hand account of how we are ready to relieve Walter Reed and help our wounded warrior."
