AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A guard at the Augusta Youth Development Campus was fired due to his actions the night an inmate was fatally beaten, according to a document given to News 12.
Marlon McCreary was fired by the Department of Juvenile Justice for failing to lock the cell doors inside unit 43 that night, according to his termination letter. The letter is dated Nov. 9, which is the day after Jade Holder died.
It says to McCreary, "As a result of your conduct, residents were allowed to enter and exit the rooms ... and fatally assault a youth under the care and custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice."
YDC records also show he was fired from the facility at least once before in 2008 before he was rehired this past July.
The GBI confirmed McCreary has been interviewed as part of the ongoing homicide investigation. Once the case file is completed, it will be reviewed by district attorney Ashley Wright, and she will determine if anyone else will face charges in the case.
So far, 17-year-old Michael Everidge, a fellow inmate, is the only person who has been charged in this case. Everidge has been charged with Holder's murder.
The DJJ said it could not comment due to the ongoing criminal investigation.
