AIKEN, S.C. -- It wasn't the way one Aiken family expected to spend their Saturday morning.

"I was in the bed, asleep, and my daughter, she came running in the room and she was like, 'Mama, you don't hear that?' I can't believe you're sleeping through all this!" said Sonya Drummings, who lives beside the scene of the shooting.

Drummings' daughter woke up to shots being fired right outside her window.

A police officer was shot on the corner of Edgefield Avenue and Church Street, just feet away from Drummings' home.

"The only thing I saw was just them lift up the officer on the gurney and carry her away," she said.

Dogs searching for evidence and flashing blue lights are not familiar sights for this quiet community by the park.

"I can't believe this is happening in my own neighborhood, 'cause it's usually quiet," Drummings said. "We don't have any trouble or anything like that."

And now, after a scene like this outside Drummings' door, she is thinking twice about how safe her neighborhood really is.

"It's just so close to home, you have to think even harder, like how are you going to protect your family?" she said.

Drummings says her parents have lived in the same home since 1976 and they have never seen anything like this.

Law enforcement still has not released any information about the name of the officer injured in the shooting or the officer's status.

A news conference is scheduled for 7 p.m.
