CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- A 16-year-old South Carolina girl has been arrested after authorities found the skeletal remains of a fetus.

Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler told multiple media outlets the teen's mother called police Sunday night after she saw pictures of what looked like a dead fetus on her daughter's cell phone.

Kegler says the woman recognized the area as a place in Conway where she and her daughter used to live. She went there, found the remains and brought them back to her Surfside Beach home before calling police.

Kegler says the fetus was buried in May. The teen was charged with desecration of human remains. She is being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia and is expected to have a hearing Tuesday.

Her name has not been released.
