WARRENVILLE, S.C. -- As deputy cars line the sides of Springwood Loop in Warren ville, the people who live there are trying to make sense of what happened right in their own backyards.
"I heard a woman scream so I walked over and walked inside, found his dead body. He was in pretty bad shape," said Joseph Warren. He says having to find a neighbor covered in blood is something no one should have to go through."Pure shock. I mean it stunned me real bad," said Warren.
Autopsy results show John Barrs died from a severe head injury due to blunt force trauma. The weapon used to kill him has yet to be found.
"It makes you want to lock your windows and lock your doors and make sure you have an extra set of eyes watching you.You never know what can happen. You never know who could do it," said Tonya Zorn.
People in the community say the hardest part to come to terms with is trying to figure out who would want to hurt their neighbor and why.
"He was good to everybody. I mean he tried to help everybody he could," said Warren.
"He was a quiet man, stayed in most of the time. You might see him once in a while drive down the road, but he was a real nice man," said Zorn.
Neighbors say for years they've looked out for each other. But after Barrs' death, they're going to be looking for some extra eyes to help watch over their community.
"I just hope they find who did it because the man, he didn't have to die like that," said Warren.
Right now, Aiken County investigators have not identified any suspects nor have they released a motive in the investigation.
