SWAINSBORO, Ga.-- Two bouquets of roses lie on the street where a husband and wife were murdered. Police say 41-year-old Deryll Bruce and his 44-year-old wife Linda were killed by their son-in-law 24-year-old Edison Ortiz.
"It's shocking to me. It's my neighbor right across the street. Didn't know they were having those kind of problems but you never know," Willie Harris said.
The shooting happened Saturday afternoon around 2:00 here at this home on Bell Street in Swainsboro, Ga. Police say the victim's daughter lived here, and the fight started as a domestic dispute.
The fight happened outside the house, and then police say more than 10 shots were fired.
A violent situation in the middle of a crowded street, and police say Ortiz even re-loaded his gun.
"Well anytime you have someone in the street shooting a gun you have potential, possibility for innocent bystanders or someone that he does not intend to shoot, get shot. That potential was definitely there," Swainsboro Police Detective, Coleman Hall said.
"I heard 8 gun shots. For some reason I got scared, panicked, and I went over to my house, mom told me to stay in. I looked out there, the lady was in the street laying down," Ahde Lee said.
Officers say Ortiz was taken into custody without incident.
"Don't know what was going through his mind at the time you know. He just might have snapped," Carmon Marion said.
Police say there is a long history here because the couple did not like their daughter's husband. A daughter now left without her husband and both parents.
Police say Ortiz is in the Emanuel County Jail charged with two counts of felony murder.
