BURKE COUNTY, Ga.---
Deputies believe 22-year-old Christopher Derik Chance, from Jenkins County, and 16-year-old Tray Sapp of Burke County both shot and killed 16-year-old, Tyrone Cates over drugs. Burke County investigators say Sapp will be charged as an adult.

Deputies say they found the Burke County High School students' car on Ben Bargeron road near Sardis around 10 o'clock Saturday morning. They say people passing by noticed the car's lights were on and it was running. They stopped to help and found Cates slumped over behind the wheel. Investigators say he was shot once in the head.

Sheriff Greg Coursey tells News 12 one of the suspects was arrested this morning and during questioning, Sheriff Coursey says one suspect implicated the other. That second suspect later surrendered to the Burke County Sheriff's Office according to Sheriff Coursey.

CHRIS : WHY?! I WANT THE TRUTH. ITS VERY HARD FOR ME TO BELIEVE YOU DID THIS. IVE KNOWN CHRIS SINCE 6TH GRADE. I DONT REALLY SEE HIM DOING THIS. BUT GUESS YOU NEVER KNOW. ONLY HIM AND TREY KNOW THE TRUTH. ONE EASY WAY TO FIND OUT WHO ACTUALLY PULLED THE TRIGGER. HOOK THEM TO A LIE DETECTOR. AND THE YOUNG BOY WHO WAS KILLED IN THIS. SHOULDNT HAVE TRIED TO HANDLE HIS COUSINS DRUG DEALS.IF HE WAS SO INNOCENT THEN WHAT WAS HE DOING AROUND THE DRUGS TO BEGIN WITH? SHOULDA BEEN AT HOME GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL OR SOMETHING.ANYRATE. MY PRAYERS TO ALL 3 BOYS.

Many of you have the slightest idea but insist on making senseless statements. One young man lost his life over a SENSELESS ACT and the other two will spend the rest of their lives behind bars. It does not matter who fired that fatal shot, they BOTH were together and neither came forward until the news of the SENSELESS ACT was known. Why is that, because they BOTH had to consume the drugs they so deliberately MURDERED that young man over. Those two young mens family can go visit them in jail but the Cates Family will NEVER be able to see Tryone again in this life. So instead of bickering back and forth, focus on what's important. As far as the cousin that Tyrone was doing the bidding for, you will never have a lucky day again because God has a way of punishing you right here on Earth. I just read that he was among the guys arrested in Richmond Co. for drugs. His cousin hasn't been laid to rest yet and he's still out there messing with drugs, shows his character all over again.

I N N O C E N T! How can that be? INNOCENT I DON'T THINK SO. Everyone in this case played a role, if everyone was innocent we wouldn't have a tragic situation. We wouldn't have a situation at all. STOP POINTING FINGERS. Chris,Trey,Cuz and The Late Mr. Cates were all involved and again the reason D R U G S. Hello, I'm not gonna turn my head anymore to the problem of drugs on our streets, it has destroyed to much and for to many.I don't believe this website was created to point fingers. I am a member of Chris Chances' family and my heart goes out to Tyrones' family and on behalf of our FAMILY we are so very sorry for your loss, nothing we can do or say will ever replace Tyrone.Your loss of Tyrone will not be in vein. We care and we are ashamed that Chris had a part (whatever it might have been in this tradgy.)CITIZENS PLEASE JOIN ME IN MY FIGHT TO GET DRUGS OUT OF OUR COMMUNITY and to put GODS'LOVE BACK INTO OUR HEARTS IF IT IS NOT LIVING THERE ALREADY

Posted by: Very Concerned Location: Waynesboro, GA. on Dec 4, 2008 at 01:29 PM
I have already posted once but let me be a little more blunt and try to shed some light on this and clarify...I DO have the facts, I assure you. Trey and Chris are both guilty. Period! And to those of you that think law enforcement did not already know of their involvement you are sadly mistaken. Chris just made it much easier when he turned himself in as opposed to having to be hunted down. Which was already in motion. To all the cousins and friends who want to believe otherwise. Go ahead if it makes you feel better. It ain't going to change a thing. There are three comments on here from people whom I happen to know DO have the facts. Myself included. They BOTH willingly took a gun to a drug deal instead of the money to pay for the drugs. And they both knew they didn't have the money. Hmmmm...why is that you think? Pretty much leaves 2 options. Armed Robbery or murder. They chose the latter. Bottom line...they are both guilty of taking the life of another young man.

people are telling very bad things about the victum as wellas the suspects, this makes it harder for all of their families. Let Tyrone rest in peace and the whole truth be made known. It is very hard for me to believe that Chris knew what Trey was going to do

For whoever wanted to be smart and reply to my comment , i have something to say to you . You dont know what youre talking about , youre just an outsider looking in with an opinion . YOU DONT KNOW THE FACTS ! I know my cousin ( TREY ) didnt do this . The police did not pick them , they turned themselves in , so theres the first thing you have no idea about ! And turning yourself in does not make you guilty , exspecially not in Trey's case . Lastly no one is going to have to shove my opinion up my ***, because i have the facts ! So i was mindful of what i said , YOU WERENT . and as far as loosing someone at that age , alot of ppl have . ive lost 2 people i knew at that age this year . As far as how the family feels , i have no idea . I would be hurt and angry if it were my family member too . I didnt know tyrone or what kind of person he was , but he didnt deserve what happened to him . and my sympathies go out to his family . i have nothing against them , i just know TREY IS INNOCENT!

I personally know both of the suspects in this case. I am the girlfriend of one of them and I know that Raymond Trey Sapp is innocent.I truly believe he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim. He should've never lost his life over this. Everyone needs to wait for the evidence to come back before they go and run their mouths. The evidence will prove who done this tragic action. Lord please be with everyone involved.

Posted by: burke co. resident on Dec 3, 2008 at 06:48 PM
For the facts on this story- Please read the True Citizen, Waynesboro local paper (www.thetruecitizen.com). Tyrone made a bad decision, but that choice should not have lead to his death. Yes, we know that the two arrested bare most of the responsibility, but what about Tyrone's cousin. In Sardis/Burke Co are we all know who you are. What are you going to do now? How can you live with yourself knowing that your 16yo cousin is dead because of you. All in Sardis think that you're the next best thing. You're a punk...Tyrone deserved better than the road his "big coz" lead him down. Pr

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 3, 2008 at 05:17 PM
I think that before we judge any person as a murder we should wait and see the evidence. I do not believe Trey killed anyone. He DID NOT admit to killing anyone. I think Trey has a drug problem and was at the wrong place at the wrong time just like Tyrone was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The RUMORS need to stop so the TRUTH can come out. I think it is a terrible tragedy that ALL of the families involved are having to deal with what has happened and have to hear the LIES being told on the streets. It is not fair to judge the suspects family members for something that has not even been proved or reported. Just because Trey turned himself in, does not mean he murdered anyone. My prayers go out to the family of Tyrone Cates, he was a good young man. But prayers also go out to the families of the other boys, they had no control over the choice the shooter, whichever one it turns out to be, made. Trey was a good young man before DRUGS took over. DRUGS are ruining our society.

Tyrone never done anthing to anybody they should have left him alone.

Posted by: disappointed Location: millen on Dec 3, 2008 at 02:12 PM
The death of Mr. Cates is a terrible thing. I have also lost someone to murder. The hurt "never" fades away. I will pray for all families involved. It is hard for me to understand after reading these comments there are people out there that do not want to believe drugs were involved. Yes, they were involved. The police didn't catch the suspects. One of them turned himself in and gave the name of the cousin that was with him. That made the other one go on in at that time. They possibly could have gotten away with it. Wake up people. You do not know people as well as you think you do. If you suspect your family or friend of doing or selling drugs. Turn them in anonymously. You will in the long run save their life. Sooner or later it will end like this. Three families destroyed over drugs. Please help the police get the drugs off of our streets before the younger generation thinks that is okay to do and sell them, too. Know what your kids are up to. It may save their life.

I am so sorry for the loss of Tyrone and I don't know who pulled that trigger. What I do know are facts.Phone records will show the call made for delivery of the drugs, not to Tyrone but 2 a family mem.of his. Tyrone paid a price, his life and for WHAT?? The bad thing is I do know the family mem.who sent him on his last mission. Miss Cates how does your family deal with that issue. MR. Plz. don't sell anymore DRUGS the real evil in all this. My God be with the Cates family and the boys' family. This has changed my outlook on life.I hope we all use this tradgy in a positive way and in memory of Tyrone to prevent anyone else that will suffer or undergo what the families are dealing with.WE should be positive and concerned citizens. We need to help our drug users and dealers find a better way through life. Drugs hurt everyone. What is really sad! I doubt Tyrone even used drugs just a young man running drugs for a dollar. MR. do you feel sad about any of this or did you just lose your DOPE ?

Posted by: pissed off Location: augusta on Dec 3, 2008 at 11:32 AM
every cousin of these two boys say they are innocent. first of all, you would be surprised what your family member is capable of doing. They probably did do it or maybe not but out of all the people in that area, why pick them? Ask yourself what made the police pick them. And for the cousin who wants everyone to shove their opinion up their ***, who's going to shove your opinion up yours when they are found guilty. So be mindful of what u say before your say it. I didn't know tyrone but I have lost someone who was his age. So this does affect everyone around!!!!

Posted by: Symphonie Cates on Dec 3, 2008 at 10:51 AM
First of all I don't care which cousin pull the trigger my baby brother died and the both of them is going to pay, cause I will be praying for justice everyday. They don't know how many lives they affected. And my brother was a good boy so,I hold alot of people responsible for his murder and theres nothing anybody can say to me,cause he's never coming back they took him away from us. And what hurts so bad is because he would have been 17 on Jan.1. It just won't be a new year for my family cause we won't have my brother here with us. To the ones that killed him and the ones that the him killed I hope you'll rot in HELL!

Posted by: Aaron Location: Burke County on Dec 3, 2008 at 09:39 AM
The killers should be let back out on the street, we know what would happen. Alot of people want them dead. Tyrone was my homeboy, a quiet young brother peace and love see you at the crossroads. Rest In Peace.

ALL OF YOU PEOPLE CAN GO TO ****!!!! MY COUSIN DIDNT KILL A **** PERSON , WHY DONT YALL TAKE YOUR OPINIONS ( because none of the **** on here is fact ) & SHOVE THEM UP YOUR ***!

Posted by: friend1 on Dec 2, 2008 at 08:54 PM
First of all you should not be talking about something you know nothing about. The only people that know what happened are the 3 involved. Unless you were there to witness who did what then keep your comments to yourself. I do not believe that Trey killed anyone. I believe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But that is my opinion and everyone has one. But unless you were there and can honestly witness what happened KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!! Instead of trying to stir up trouble everyone needs to be parying for all 3 families because they are all going through some kind of Grief.

Posted by: F Location: Augusta on Dec 2, 2008 at 07:31 PM
To "sad"-you do not know what you are talking about. Please refrain from making any more comments that will show your lack of knowledge about this situation. DRUGS WERE DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN THIS INCIDENT.

I LOVE TYRONE CATES R.I.P YOU WILL ALWAYS BE APART OF BURKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ALL REMEMBERANCE IN YOU

I would have to say that it is not law enforcements's fault at all. They didn't kill anyone. They did however put two people behind bars that did. Good for them. Those of you who seem to know that neither one nor the other of these boys could have commited this crime because you "know them" obviously know very little. The Sheriff's Office and the GBI aren't in the business of locking innocent people up and that old school mentality that they would lock someone up just to close a case is absurd. People...you need to quit pointing your finger at others and quit writing, texting, typing or outright talking about things you have no clue about. Were you there when the killing happened? No! Did you process the scene? No! You have no idea what law enforcement did or did not find. Do you honestly think that they make everything public knowledge? Wake up people. To the family I say this. Your loss is tragic and our hearts go out to you. God keep you and bless you.

Posted by: sad Location: safe on Dec 2, 2008 at 04:28 PM
i want to know why want they show the boys who did this they admitted to doing it so there goes your tere innocent teory and i don't think drugs had nothing to do with this either they didn't found nothing so why say it was drugs related

Posted by: Concerned Citizen Location: Waynesboro on Dec 2, 2008 at 04:06 PM
First and foremost, May God have mercy on all the families involved. Secondly, it is time for people to stop pointing the finger at the police when something happens. The law is the law and ignorance to the law is no excuse. None of us, WORKING, parents can be with our children 24/7 therefore we don't know what our children get involved in. Nothing good can come of blaming the police for everything that happens in this county. Just remember this one fact, every time you witness a crime and fail to report it, YOU BECOME APART OF THE PROBLEM. So stop being apart of the problem and start being apart of the solution.

Posted by: F Location: Augusta on Dec 2, 2008 at 03:56 PM
There were drugs found at the scene. This was drug related. Please do not comment about things you don't know about.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 2, 2008 at 02:10 PM
it wasnt chris who killed tyrone. i know chris really really good. he would never do anything like this. i also know tray. he has a crimnal background. and tray has admitting of killing tyrone. chris did not know anythiing like that was going to happen. he was just there with his little cousin tray. and if you do not know what is going on dont call some one a killer.

Tyrone's my cousin, i've watched him grow up but sadly i want see him grow into a man. My comment is for those who don't think trey did it why did he turn himself in, and as far as drug play, they investigators they didn't find ANY drugs at the sence. My cousin is not here to speak for himself so they are going by what Trey and Christopher are saying and they are the guilty one's because they MURDERED my cousin and they are going to pay!!!!!

Posted by: monique Location: augusta on Dec 2, 2008 at 11:21 AM
i would like to say that I am sick and tired to the news always reporting that crimes are drug related when they are probably not. just because the victim is black doesn't mean he sold drugs. And why are the pictures of these two suspects being shown to the public. If they were black their picture would be posted every 5 mins. Someone needs to get thier facts straight and report the RIGHT info.

Posted by: friend Location: augusta on Dec 2, 2008 at 10:56 AM
I grew up with Trey Sapp and he is a kind and understanding boy. You will never convince me he killed anyone, he got caught up with some pretty bad people. Please pray for all involved and not make this a white and black issue.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Waynesboro on Dec 2, 2008 at 09:13 AM
I have known Trey all his life and it really saddens me to know that he is being charged with murder. Some of you speak of parenting, well it is a little known fact that as a parent you can raise your children to the best of you ability and what road they choose is entirely up to them. Kinda like the old saying, " you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." As parents we can't always hold their hand, we can only pray and hope that they do what is right. I pray for all families involved in hopes that God will bring them peace.

from personal stand by experience the police in waynesboro diffently do not follow up on any drug problems in that area.. they rather just sit in their car and talk on thier phone or radio just to avoid paper work and that is sad because teens my age are dying from it i personal think the law should give parents back the parenting rights that they had when my mom was growing up and the world wouldnt have gotten this bad i directly know trey and his family and by an outsiders view u would never think that trey would be capable of such a tradgic crime but u also dont no what drugs can do to a innocent person's mind.. the only people that really know the truth is trey, the other suspect, and tyron and God.... God bless all the familes affected it is so sad for someone my age taking away when they had a whole a life ahead of them

Posted by: none Location: augusta on Dec 1, 2008 at 08:50 PM
Iwant chanell 12 to get it right and i notice when you have black suspects you show them on tv but since these are white kids you dont have their pictures up. so why you wont go ahead and put the white sheet over your head! be fair and do the same for all.

First things first, lets focus on what's really important and that is an innocent life was taken. It doesn't matter why, who, or whatever, but what matters is a young man's life was cut short for stupidity. His family is left to grieve and mourn his death, and that is something that none of us can undo. To his sister Symphonie and the rest of his family, my prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. I pray that God may grant you the peace and understanding that you will need to get through this. Lets not glorify the "accused" by putting them in the spotlight, lets glorify this young man's memory and help lift his family up. God Bless!

Sometimes it doesn't matter how u raise ur kids they are going to do what they want. One suspect is my brother and the other is my cousin. Until evidence proves me wrong, I will not believe Trey killed anyone. You can't always belive what u hear from others..Innocent until proven guilty... Remember that!

Posted by: anonymous Location: anonymous on Dec 1, 2008 at 03:40 PM
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE PHRASE 'TO PROTECT AND SERVE 'I agree it does start at home , but when the parent is the drug pusher, then who protects these kids,or the citizens of these communities. Its lack of education, jobs, parenting, we can go on and name many reason why ? There should never have to be a WHY ? Police may have limited budgets But the fact still remains TO serve and protect If your budget is to small call in help from other sources. Our kids are killing each other what more does it take to happen..Put your self in these families shoes and ask your self what would i do if it happened to me.what if it was my kid dead.GOD BLESS THE PARENTS..Its time to pull together

Posted by: BAD REPORTING Location: WAYNESBORO on Dec 1, 2008 at 03:00 PM
THE VICTIM IS NOT RELATED TO EITHER SUSPECT. IF CHANNEL 12 CANNOT GET THE FACTS, THEY DO NOT NEED TO REPORT ANYTHING. IT JUST MAKES THE TRUTH HARDER TO COME OUT!!!! THE 2 SUSPECTS ARE COUSINS. GET THE FACTS!!!!!!

Posted by: Al Location: Millen on Dec 1, 2008 at 01:41 PM
It isn't all the police's fault. They are doing what they can with limited budgets, and thousands of other problems that people call them for. Where are the parents..they let the kids do whatever they want, stay out all night and when the cops do catch them, all they do is defend them because they kids do no wrong. The problem starts at home and should be solved long before the cops have to get involved, but if they do, let the kids go spend some time in jail. Better now for something minor than a needle in the arm like these two will probably get.

I am a former resident of the Jenkins/Burke county area. IT is sad to here of another terrible tragedy in these small towns. We all know that these areas are drug infested and the police do nothing to stop it.Until there is something done you can expect more things like this to happen.I say to you Who are mothers , fathers , sisters ,brothers, etc. and all concerned people, get out make it heard that you want something done, go to your higher Goverment Demand that something be done to crack down on the drug activity that goes on in these areas, IT is so sad to know this happened to these kids,My heart goes out to all families, may god bless them and comfort them..again As we know millen, waynesbor, sylvania, and sardis are drug infested areas. you find you local police hanging out in stores, sitting talking, just not giving a crap about their communities,I SAY GET THEM OUT ON PATROL TO DO THIER JOBS.There is not enough of education in these areas something has to be done

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Sardis on Dec 1, 2008 at 12:10 PM
The two suspects were not related to the young man that was killed. This is a terrible misunderstanding by the media. The two suspects are cousins but of NO relation to the victim. Please correct this on your website and on the news.

Those 2 boys was not tyrone cousin tyrone is black those boys are white no connection Tyrone was a mature young man to be his age so now that he is with Jesus lets repect him enough to get the story right his mother will never be the same thing like this should never happen but it do we now need a prayer session for the family of the late Tyrone cates the whole town of Sardis should feel the pain of this young mother this is down right sad all the young children that knew Tyrone is so sad and they did not sleep at all knowing a death angel came through these boys and took him The Boys that killed him will never rest his spirit will forever be before them

I can't tell if the last post is serious or someone trying to make a mockery of this situation. You certainly won't elicit community support and empathy by intentionally dismantling written English. This is a tragic situation but even more tragic is the glorification of being uneducated as that same lack of hope and pride is what is killing young men and women all across America.
