AUGUSTA, Ga. --- Domestic violence affects one out of every four women in America and Georgia ranks 12th in the nation for it.

"We heard a pop, and then a second pop." Vivian Shook will never forget what she heard and saw on Friday afternoon.

"The man grabbed her by the hair and was holding her and had a gun to her head," said Vivian.

That man was David Mosley, the woman his estranged wife and watching in horror; Vivian and her granddaughter.

"At first I thought it was kids playing around because people have fireworks and stuff like that so you think, 'pop, pop', oh it's a firecracker," said Mercedes Phillips.

But it wasn't, it was their neighbor shooting his estranged wife, once in the ankle and then in the leg.

David Mosley, 47, is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

"They were chasing each other around the car and there was blood all over the cars and everything and it was like whoa, " said Mercedes.

"It really shocked me, it really did because they used to be a happy couple. You just don't know what's going on behind closed doors," said Vivian.

In Georgia, more than 30 percent of domestic violence incidents are committed by a present or former spouse. Vivian and her granddaughter are just glad Carolyn survived and no one else got hurt.

"I'm glad my little brother and sister were in school because we come outside and play, and if they would've been out here, it could've been horrible," said Mercedes.

"We could've got shot because bullets fly," said Vivian.

And seeing this kind of violence first hand makes Mercedes want to raise awareness about the problem.

"People my age should know more about it so when they grow up, they don't get into situations like that," said Mercedes.

Carolyn Mosley has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
