News 12 First at Five, October 2, 2008

AUGUSTA, Ga.---Several suspects are still on the run, but investigators say they now have leads as to who killed 23-year-old Jezreel Hammond during a home invasion.

Authorities were called to Hammond's home at 2806 Royal Street around 3 o'clock this morning. That's near Walton Way and Highland.

Hammond lived at the home with his grandmother. She was at home at the time, and witnessed the whole thing, but she was not injured.

"I tell you it's pitiful! It's pitiful!" Mary Lyons watched it all unfold from her porch after she heard a knock at the door. "She was screaming! She was screaming! And she was hollering my son! My son! The done killed my son!"

Lyons says Hammond's grandmother was inconsolable as she told them what happened. "Told him if he didn't give over the money, they'd kill the grandmother. That's awful. That's awful."

That's when Mary says Jezreel Hammond answered -- "He said I don't have no money. They beat him and throw him upside the house and beat him and shot him she said she don't know how many shots. She said he took two deep breaths -- gone that quick."

And so were the suspects. Deputies spent the morning posting fliers around the neighborhood and spreading the word about a cash reward, hoping it will pay off and break the case.

"Just with all the break ins and everything, you anticipate other people getting broken into, not shot." This young mother and neighbor who did not want to be identified says her home burglarized this year.

Now that the crime spree has turned deadly arrests can't come soon enough, especially for Mary "I hope and trust the good lord they be caught. Can't run forever."

Investigators are still tracking down leads tonight. Right now, they don't have any suspects, or motive and they don't know if this is an isolated incident or connected with any other recent crimes. They are offering a cash reward.

Hammond was on parole from the Georgia prison system for a marijuana conviction. State records indicate he was granted parole November 27, 2007 after serving about 15 months of his sentence.
His parole was to end in 2016.

To the person who is trying to keep this family in pain! I knew Jaz personally and he wasnt no crack dealer! And he was arrested for weed! Are you serious with what you are saying! He didnt have money like that! Do you know that they went and killed this man because they felt like he had alot of money on him from selling weed! These boys were deseperate and you are absolutely wrong for what you are putting out about Jaz life he was the victim so what if he had a weed charge! As I read what you write I feel like you maybe a family member of the killers! Those little boys had no reason for what they did.You should talk about who rasied those little killers! Was it you? Did you tell them what your saying to us. Oh if they sell drugs they deserve to die so load your guns my sons and go get paid! The message you are sending out is completely wrong!!!!! Jazz wasnt a saint but he was a good person and he wasnt killing anybody getting caught with weed...HE WASNT A GANG BANGER!!!!!

It's is funny how you are always anonymous what is in you file what's up with you. I bet you got so much up with you that you are keeping under the cover but when it comes out, wait and see how you get judged. But it is all good because when you meet you maker you will see what kind of judgement you get. To Mr. hammonds family sorry for your lose. I wish ya'll well and please let god handle this, you might not see it quick but he will make sure it is handle, and to the people who can't say nothing that's going to help this problem we would like for you to keep your comment short and sweet. THANK YOU MR. OR MS. NEED TO LOOK AT YOUR OWN LIFE.

OH PLEASE!!!! Lift yourself out of your denial, if he wasn't into drugs then explain his 3-4 felony convictions for dealing??!!! OH let me guess... he didn't do it. That's what they all say and believe me, I know it working in law enforcement. You don't have to be a junkie as you said to know that he was into this stuff, look at his criminal history for crying out loud. Don't be so ignorant.

First of all. For all the people judging i hope you are prepared 4 your return! I knew jez personally, 1st he was no gang banger and never was gang realted so if u dont know the facts i advise you keep quiet, two While u so called grown people leaving negative comments you need 2 be watching your own kids. And if you said he was dealing drugs u must have been a faithful customer U Junkies. If you dont have anything positive 2 say keep it movin. All my condolences goes to the hammonds family. Those kids need their life taken from them because his mother is not going to be able 2 see him again. So those murders guess what gotta go. Jez was not a murderer and he didnt deserve this, but please believe God got everything under control because that wasnt of god, that was the work of the enemy and believe they will have a even worst death. Either its in prison or out. Just watch how god work! I love you jez & really miss you. I know you looking down from heaven smiling:) Justice Will Be Served

No one has said anything negative we're just pointing out the facts. Im not saying that the person who killed him doesn't deserve justice, of course he does. But before you start petitioning for this man to be a saint... think of the countless children and grandchildren that he helped enable addictions or started new ones because he chose to deal in illegal drugs and activities. Think of the danger he brought to his grandmother in her own home. I am going to point out that fact that if you're going to get involved in the street type of life you should be prepared for the consequences. Violence and death come hand in hand with that environment he knew what he signed on for. If his family didn't want this supposedly wonderful man where he is right now why didn't they stop making excuses for him, they had 23 years to raise him right. His death is a reaction of not only his murderers but his families and his own actions. How's that for a negative comment...

The people making negative comments are very cold hearted. Who cares about this young man pass. This young man life has been taken and the person who took his life needs to be caught. How would some of ya'll feel if you lost a love one and people said negative comments about them and have never met them. Personally, I dont know this young man but I know what they are going through. I lost a friend a few months ago due to violence. My prayers go out to family and friends of Mr.Jazreel Hammond. R.I.P.

It's a shame that a young life was lost. My opinion is that if Georgia would make people do MOST of their prison time, they would think twice before getting involved with crime again? This guy did 15 months of a 10 year sentence. He shouldn't even haven been out to be murdered. He was suppossed to get out in 2016. It's a shame that convicts have the mindset of how much time they are willing to do to make a quick buck...to take a chance and play the odds. 15 months of a 10 year sentence, they can handle that...it dosen't seem to be enough to deter them. I see that mindset every day. I work there. He went to prison at age 21 and got out 23. Maybe if he got out at 33, he would have a different mindset...who knows. Regardless, it's a shame. RIP.

If he wasn't involved in street gang/drug activity why does he have 3 felony cases. From the Richmond County Clerk of Court (all public record): 2006: Possession of Marijuana w/ Intent, Possesion of Firearm by Convicted Felon, Possession of Firearm During Crime. 2004: Possession of Marijuana w/ Intent. 2003: Possession of Marijuana w/ Intent. You cannot say that this wasn't all drug/gang related. Maybe you didn't know your guy as well as you thought.

We're losing too many young people. One murder a year is too many. Last year there were twenty seven in this county! They were all cleared, but that is small consolation for the dead and those that love them. We've got too much evil going on in Richmond County. I've been trying to wake this town up since 1999. What's it going to take to convince people that the next victim maybe you or someone you love? You can not afford to be complacent, there is a war going on right under your noses!

quite one- you're right, the media like this station is a joke. they put out there what they want for ratings, not putting out two sides to every story just the crooked DA's office version, they can't even get their facts straight just want to prosecute someone so they'll look good to people who just don't know any better. God Bless the grandmother and I hope she doesn't have see or hear other people's opinion about things they know nothing about.

This was a wonder man, me and Jez had classes together and school and he wasnt the type to cause drama he was always quiet but if you got to know the real Jez, he could have been a friend for life. We had good times in music appreciation together Rest in peace Jez...
