News 12 Midday, August 29, 2008

AUGUSTA, Ga -- 169 alleged dead beat dads and moms in Richmond County were targeted this week in Operation Back to School Sweep for Child Support.

It's a sting operation that began with Richmond County courts saying enough is enough, now they're putting parents who don't pay in jail.

And News 12 went along for the ride as one by one, Richmond County deputies arrested parents accused of being dead beat moms and dads.

Gardner, "Do you have anything to say?"
Towe, "For what?"
Gardner, " For not paying your child support?"
Towe, "I've been paying it, 182 dollars a week."
Gardner, "You're not behind on any payments?"
Towe,"I'm sure I am."

This is Kevin Towe, deputies say he has five kids and he's behind about 30 thousand dollars, so he's now going to jail.

Gardner, "Why did you get behind on your payments?"
Towe, "Because i was strung out on dope. I didn't ask for this."
Gardner, "Neither did your kids so what happened?"

Towe says his meth habit a few years ago got him behind, now he says he's clean and he's working to catch up.

Gardner, "Any lessons learned here?"
Towe, "Yeah"
Gardner, "What's that?"
Towe, "Do the right thing."

It's a lesson that deputies say is coming at his children's expense.

"Some of them are behind thousands and thousands of dollars and you know, it's not fair." says Lt. Scott Gay. He helped organize the sweep and he's a father himself, so it's an operation that is personal for him.
"I've heard words like you can't call them dead beat moms or dead beat dads because they don't deserve the title of Mom or Dad and I have to agree with that -- shame on you."

"Where are we going to now?" Dee Humphreys is on one of four teams working this week to arrest the 169 targets. "We put in as many hours as it takes to get these people locked up and off the street, it's like hunting deer."

Because he says many of these parents already know they're wanted, so some lie about where they live or move or hide. Humphreys says that makes deputies have to show up at odd hours to find them and arrest them.

10 moms were targeted in the operation, the rest, all accused dead beat dads, like Gerrard Middleton.

Gardner, "Have you paid at all this year?"
Middleton, "I ain't paid nothing this year."

Deputies say he's behind $38,000 on just his one child.

Gardner, "Do you feel bad about getting behind on your child support?"
Middleton, "I ain't been working -- I got a broke back."

Humphreys, "He doesn't seem too happy about it, but he's going to jail."

And after a long night, and a long week, deputies say there is hope. "Feels really good. Hopefully judges can get some child back wages going and some help for the kids who haven't had any."

Lt. Scott Gay tells News 12 as of this morning, 73 of the 169 targets have been located -- some have paid up and others were too far behind and are still in jail waiting on that hearing this afternoon.

Of course News 12 will be there to follow it, so stay tuned to News 12 First at Five for the latest.

so the first guy is paying 182 a week when they arrest him he is trying to get back on track after screwing up. how much are the kids getting while he is in jail? nothing, after he gets out of jail? not much because he will probably lose his job and no longer have money to pay. so all in all they screwed up on the first one. I pay my child support on time every time they just increased how much I owe and did it in such a way that I am suddenly behind. my ex doesn't have a job so the only money she gets is what I pay. who is the bad parent here? who is more likely to get arrested? all I am saying is make sure you arrest the right people at least the first guy was trying to get back on track when the cops screwed him.

Yes, I think there should be consequeces for not paying child support. Male or female, and people have to realize by not paying is only hurting the children and the parent thats struggling to take care of the child without any help. They also have to remember that the child didn't ask to be here, so before you make them be financially stable to take care of them if you are in a relationship or not. P.S I think that the government should also approve a work program inside the jail facility, so they can work inside and earn some income to pay child support even though they are incarcerated because some go to jail to get out of paying and have a free room and board and a hot meal.

I have a child who's father is one of those deadbeats. BUT I haven't heard anything about my child support case. My child is now 18years old and is in her first year of college. Her father is over $28,000.00 behind in child support and everytime I call the child support office why do they ask me do I have any information about a job or anything on him. If thats the case they should pay me to their job. I feel if I was the type of mother that didn't work to take of my child and was getting the support of the state or any kind of help from the state or the government the office of child support would be willing do even more to make sure that we get off of the help of the state government. So please tell me when and if my child would get the child support that is old to her. This would be a big help for her college education.

Its a no win situation for the taxpayers. If they are out of jail and not paying we (taxpayers) are paying for the kids and if they are in jail we are paying for them and the kids.

First off, what has happen is a great thing!!! If men and women are not taking care of their kids they should be in jail...It takes two people to make a baby. Why should only one person be responsible for taking care of them? Regardless of how much money one parent is making the other parent is just a responsible financally for their child...Also please DO NOT assume that just because a person is not getting child support that the HAVE to be getting money from the Government...There are plenty of parents that foot the bill alone but why should they have to?

I have custody of my teenaged daughter and my ex-wife owes more than $13,000 in back child support. Our daughter is the only child she has and she make well over $70,000 a year. My daughter is doing well and we live a comfortable lifestyle. My ex-wife has only one child our daughter but refuses to pay. I will continue to try to collect the child support she owes. Unlike the Rick in Beech Island I feel that child support should be paid. I paid my ex when she had custody of our child. If parents paid their child support and took care of their children we wouldn't have the need for welfare food stamps etc.

Good job!!! i'm sure some of them are probably wanted criminals too for other things. Hey rick, they are getting locked up because they are not paying...the taxpayers are paying for those who aren't paying...the single moms are getting supplemented i'm sure by the state. Garnishing their wages is what's supposed to happen and if they are not working then they don't need to be on the streets cause they'll just end up committing crimes.

ok first arrest them...now who pays child support when he or she is in jail? now second should'nt the person with the child or children make sure before anything that they can take care of children/child without relying on that so so call dead beat parent ..i would .this is why some people should'nt have children because its both there fault.

So what are they going to do about these parents. That is why there single moms and dad out there and they dont go after the money for the kids cause they know they are not going to get it.
