AUGUSTA- A former Richmond County deputy is in trouble with the law.

44-year-old Joseph Smalls worked at the Richmond County Jail, but a judge says he'll have to spend three years behind bars for the way he talked to an inmate during inappropriate conversations that were recorded.

The former deputy had worked for the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for a few months when the recording was done.

This is in response to perry location-- I think everyone deserve to be treated with respect, including inmates. There is no reason for anyone to be sexually harassed and made to have sex against there will. Not everyone that goes to jail are consider bad people, some people are just caught in wrong place and wrong time with the wrong people.I think it's crazy, and he should be ashamed of himself. I'm sure if you have children you would not appreicate someone doing that to your child or maybe yourself. As a Richmond County deputy he should have behaved in a appropiate manner especially at work. His job is to protect, serve and uphold the law, NOT go against the law, two wrongs don't make right. He has lost everything from his job to family and his reputation over this CRAZY MESS.......................

He broke the law...oh well. It is illegal to solicit sex from an incarcerated person. They cannnot consent to sex. He got what he deserved.

We give criminals too many rights, and for an officer to say anythig to an inmate then that should not come back to haunt him. They're criminals and should be treated with the least amount of respect. It's the only way they will learn to not want to come back to jail. I bet the sherrif is now doing more time than the inmate, go figure!!!
