WAYNESBORO, Ga.---One person is dead and another wounded after a shooting in the downtown Waynesboro area.

City police have identified John Paul Jones, 22, as the man killed.
The woman wounded is Chaquita Ellison, 19, who was reported in stable condition at a hospital.

Sources indicated it happened near the KFC Restaurant, at a home in the 1000 block of Fuller St. Police say they found several types of drugs in that home, including marijuana, crack and cocaine.

Missy Kelly owns a daycare near where the shooting happened. She says it's a concern because her playground is just across the street.

"The people that's hanging out around, I think the crime is coming with them," Kelly said.

Some are surprised to see police tape at the house. It's a Habitat for Humanity House.

"I feel like that there should not be any drugs, any wrongdoing in a house, in any house, but especially a habitat house," said Kelly.

Habitat for Humanity helps low-income people by building houses with no interest-loans so they can afford them. Kelly says that's why it's a shame.

"Where people have come in and volunteered their time to help build your house," she said.

One thing she is thankful for though, is that no one was at the daycare when it happened, around 2:30 in the morning.

She says this crime in her backyard is gonna make her keep a closer eye out.

"All we can do is try our best to keep them safe. When they're on the playground, we're out on the playground with them," Kelly said.

While it worries her, she also knows it's nothing compared to the worries of these victim's families.

"That's all we can do now is just pray for the family and pray for the community," she said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. They are still looking for suspects.

To the it figures writer. Obviously you need to keep your comments to yourself. You apparently know nothing about Lil JP because if you did you wouldn't say the things you have. I went to school with him and have been a friend of the family since i was old enough to remember. THe jones family is one of the nicest families in waynesboro and Lil JP was a very nice guy. He was good hearted and very selfless. I have been moved away for some time now and he kept up with me and my life. Sure drugs are everywhere in Burke county that is obvious but i guarantee you if you were to raid the jones residence you wouldn't find any. JP was at someone elses house and was killed for something he had nothing to do with. He was there with the girl in the bed watching a movie not slingin crack out of the front door. Get your facts straight before you talk about someone who isn't around to defend themselves anymore. remember the good things and keep the bad to yourself. And mornthe deadnot how they paybil

I was so hurt yesterday to hear the news about Jr. We became friends in high and the friendship continue after that. I always enjoyed being around him. I was really sad bc since I left BC we slowly lost touch. He had been tellin my friends he want to see me but i never made the time to drive down there. I know that someone has to know what happen and needs to tell. They have taken away my friend life. Its still hard to believe that he is really gone.

I am sorry that this happened to such a good young man. If you ever had the opportunity to get to know him you surely would have loved him. He had a heart of gold and loved his family very much. It is not my place to blame nor judge anyone. I just pray that God mend the broken hearts of the famiy members. A family has lost someone dear to them and just reading the comments above greive my heart greatly. Lets pray for our neighbors and those in need. I am truly sorry and I do know God will not put no more on us than we can bare. Remember the good times and the smiles he put on the faces of all he encountered.

It's sad to see such a good person loose his life over some non-sense.I'm not even from that county and i've heard file things about that family. It seems to that money and drugs is the reason for his death. R.I.P JR.

WHAT A BAD THING TO HAPPEN TO SUCH A GOOD MAN. THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPEN TO THE YOUNG MAN WHO TOOK THIS HOUSE OVER. HOW DARE THE STEP MOTHER WALK AROUND IN TEARS AND JUST LAST SOME WEEKS AGO SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT THIS YOUNG MAN MOVING BACK INTO HER HOUSE. THE FAMILY WALKING AROUND ALL CONCERN BUT I BELIEVE IT WAS A SET UP. THE ONE THAT SHOULD BE LAYING ON THE TABLE IS THE OLDER GUY WHO TOOK OVER THE HOUSE FROM HIS SISTER. YOU ARE TOO OLD TO BE WALKING AROUND MESSING WITH THE YOUTH. TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAT UP TO BE ROB AND ATTACKED DEALING WITH THIS FAMILY. TO THE JONES FAMILY I WILL KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS. GOD SAW FIT TO CALL HIS CHILD HOME. HE PICKED A GOOD FLOWER. KEEP YOUR HEAD HIGH BECAUSE WE ALL HAVE TO CROSS THE RIVER. RIP JOHNNY PAUL JONES JR. TAKE YOUR REST. WE LOVED YOU BUT GOD LOVED YOU BEST.

The police don't even patrol this area hardly ever and takes forever if you call them. It's sad when you're scared to play outside with your kids or walk alone to your car.The cops know and they just look the other way.You can stand outside and watch drug deals all day and night. Maybe this is what it takes to get some action for our tax dollars. People should put their hope in God and not drugs-look what a sad thing happens.

it is sad that someone lost there life and all the people can think about is how they paid the house note yyall done forgot abouth the victim no matter what he was doing there it just hardens my heart that people seems to worry about negative stuff at the wrong time just plain out sad

Well there's the problem, since she was the owner and was a drug user, why didn't Hab 4 Hum get involved and take back the house. She should have been in rehab, the ouse given to soomeone who needs it, and she starts back over once she's out of rehab. Knowing she did drugs should have been a sign for them to closely monitor the household for illegal activity. Neighbors need to get involved and become nosey, looking the other way only escalates criminal activity. Let's help the sheriff dept by making some phone calls to help who needs help

Just because drugs were found in the house does not mean he was into drugs so many times society stereotype our young black men and this is not the case.No matter what the situation is someone's child is dead and had it been in a wal-mart shopping center or perhaps @ his family's home, justice needs to be properly served and not going on as if you expected this because it is a low-income neighborhood.Drug dealing is going on in the rich neighborhoods and even in high paying work places,so does that mean I need not work and settle for less because i want to be safe and free from drug dealing? ITS IMPOSSIBLE!So lets look at it as if it was our child. My heart goes out to the Jones and the McGruder family.God is just to fail and too wise to make a mistake.

familiar with the case. The victim is not the owner of the house the female that own the house is living with parents because she can't seem to get off drugs. her brother took over the house and he allowed someone to come in a stay in the house which is the victim that is dead. what a shame that this young man was caught up with this family and they have a track record of this sort of thing. back between 1988-1990 a female got killed messing with this same family. i am sure the brother that was in the house used drug money to pay the house payment up to date. he was living in the house because the owner couldn't keep her self of drugs long enought to take care of the house and her business. what a shame i have to pay interest on my house and my here she is messing up up Habitat for Humanity she need to loose the house.

Keep this in mind when people try to sway you with the "drug use is a victim-less crime" argument.

While it is tragic that one person died and another is wounded--it figures that these are people who obivously had to be helped by Habitat for Humanity because they were down and out and could not afford a home. How funny it is that they can afford DRUGS though!! It figures, just another instance where sorry people get a break --- the bad part is someone who really needed a break did not get one.
