AUGUSTA, Ga.---One man admits he shot another, but it's the man who was shot who went to jail.

The Thurman family says after they were robbed twice, they got a security system and a gun. Now, they say, they've both come in handy.

"As soon as [the motion sensor] went off, we were able to look out the window and see that he had opened the door to the truck," said Michael Thurman.

He says he thought it was a burglar.

So he grabbed his gun, ran downstairs and went outside.

"When I saw him right here I said hey what are you doing?" Thurman said.

An incident report shows the suspect, Jeffery Whitt, started to run to a dark part of the yard.

Thurman says he couldn't see him and was afraid he might be going to get a gun.

"Anything could've been in [the] area, so I did what I thought I needed to protect myself and my family. I fired a few shots,"

One of those shots into the dark hit the suspect in the leg.

Whitt kept running down the street and ended up at Macedonia Baptist Church.

Deputies arrested him and took him to MCG.

Thurman says his GPS system was missing and deputies found one between his house and the church.

Michael's wife says she's glad her husband stood up for her.

"I am proud that I have a husband that would protect his family," Angela Thurman said.

Michael's thankful his bullet only hurt the suspect, but even happier it helped deputies catch him.

But still, he says he and his wife may have some sleepless nights.

"I'm still shaking from the incident. Going through anything like that is horrible," Michael said.

A Home owner has the right to protect his property. If more Home Owners would do the same then maybe we could get a handle on this crime spree here in Augusta. If the D.A. files charges for a Home Owner proteting his property, then we need to call for a special election for a new D.A. he needs to remeber he works for us, and he can be replaced!

Is this america. Didnt we fight in wars to live in a free country. A free country should mean we have the right to protect our family and what we worked to buy. We didnt break into other peoples stuff to get what we got. Chrales Bronson showed in Death Wish that we can make a difference. The law cant stop them. It looks like we are gonna have to start protecting ourselves. Are we tired of living in the fear of the lazy punks and thugs yet?

If a person thinks their life is in danger , they should do what is necessary to protect themselves . People works too hard for what they have for someone to come by and take it because "its there ". If more did what this gentleman did ,there would be less crime . He should be commended for his actions .

This kind of theft destroys a neighborhood's quality of life, and it imposes intolerable harm upon the poor by causing people of means to seclude themselves in exclusive, gated suburbs -- thereby causing cities to lose tax revenue and removing access job opportunities among poor people who lack their own transportation. For the sake of the poor, we must send a message that thieves simply will not be tolerated, and that going onto another person's property to steal from him is simply unthinkable.

Yes I think home owners should be able to protect their property from people stealing from them. To charge a property owner for protecting their property is a disgrace here in America. The law gives the criminal alot of rights and the takes away the property owners' rights to protect themselves and their property.

I think it is great the home owner stood up for his families rights!! If we all start standing up maybe these thugs will get the message. Wake-up thugs and get a JOB!!!!!
