NEW ELLENTON, SC-- A postal worker resigns in New Ellenton after 23 years on the job. She stepped down after allegations of theft.

43-year-old Denise Key is not charged in the case, but she has been questioned by federal agents.

Denise Key says she is no Christmas Grinch and the fact she's now the talk of the town, is hurtful.

Allegations of tampered mail and theft at New Ellenton's Post Office.

"We've actually got them where they'd be wide open." says customer Mickey.

Ruth Wilson agrees. " I've had several letters opened and resealed. My social security card was not in it and now I have to call the social security board about it, but all my other paper work was in there."

These are just some of the complaints from the post office. Employees say it's been a problem for quite awhile.

"This time of the year, nothing is impossible." says customer Edna Kissiah.

"It concerns me, especially with all this identity theft going on. It makes me angry." adds Wilson.

Federal authorities notified New Ellenton's Police Chief that something may be wrong in November. A day later, they came and questioned Denise Key, a postal carrier for the last 23 years. She resigned that day.

"I feel like all the blame is being put on me, and it's not me. I'm no
Christmas Grinch." says Key. She says she resigned because of the investigation and because of health reasons.

She also says the only mail she ever opened, belonged to her own family. "I opened some mail. My ex husband's and my son's mail. If they want to charge me, fine. They can charge me. I'm guilty of that."

She also says she's aware of the ongoing mail problems at the post office. "I don't want to be the only one blamed in all of this mess. They need to keep investigating and find out that a lot of our problems come from Augusta."

And that's where New Ellenton's customers may be headed as well. Customers like Milton Williams, "I'll carry mine to the post office in Augusta from now on."

News 12 tried calling the US Postal Service Special Agent in charge of this investigation, but our calls were not returned. We are also still waiting to hear back from the Office of Inspector General who is also involved in this investigation.

Key was questioned more than two weeks ago, but she has yet to be charged. She says she told the truth to investigators and they searched her car. Key says she even offered to let them search her house because she says she has nothing to hide.

i read about the postal carrier accused of theft and my heart goes out to her. i am also a postal carrier being falsely accused of fraud. i have not been charged; however, i have been questioned on two different occasions. i have not resign from the postal service and i have no plans to. i will fight the accusations and will be looking for an attorney to help me. the office of inspector geneeral has disrupted my life and my health. i hope denise was able to find peace, as for me i am still looking. even though, i am innocent i still feel like a prisoner in my home and i am constantly looking over my shoulder everyday. i believe it is terrible to live in fear. i guess that when we accepted a government position we should have been aware we were giving up our basic rights as citizens.

We always ejoyed denise delivering mail in new ellenton. what is she doing now?

Posted by: BILLY Location: AIKEN on Feb 29, 2008 at 03:10 AM
She's not the first person in Aiken County to have been falsely accused of a crime she didn't commit. Maybe this is a wakeup call for us all to stop encouraging law enforcement to run around arresting people just based on an accusation or rumor. We hope she sues for liable and slander. She should contact Mark Hardee, a Columbia lawyer who specializes in this field.

You need to check the aiken county detention center records. She was arrested and bonded out. maybe shes lying to you to.

WELL IT,S HAPPENED AGAIN. PEOPLE BELIEVE WHAT THEY READ IN THE NEWSPAPER,WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IS TRUE OR FALSE.DENISE WAS NOT ARRESTED,HAS NEVER BEEN CHARGED OR INDICTED IN THIS ALLEGED CRIME.IMAGINE HOW HER FAMILY FELT WHEN THEY READ THE HEADLINE THAT SHE HAD BEEN ARRESTED.HER ENTIRE FAMILY TRIED DESPERATELY TO GET IN TOUCH WITH HER. SHE WAS NOT IN JAIL..GUESS WHERE SHE WAS? SHE HAD JUST COMPLETED WORKING A 12 HOUR SHIFT AND WENT HOME TO GO TO BED AND GET SOME SLEEP. WHEN SHE WAS TOLD WHAT HAD BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT HER IN THE PAPER, SHE COLLAPSED AND STARTED WEEPING. I KNOW, BECAUSE I,M HER MOTHER AND I WAS THE ONE THAT HAD TO TELL HER ABOUT THE UNTRUE HEADLINE IN THE PAPER.HER TEENAGE SON WAS IN SCHOOL AND A TEACHER PUT THE PAPER UP TO HIS FACE AND SAID ...LOOK WHERE YOUR MOTHER IS.NOW...HE HAD TO STAY IN SCHOOL, THINKING HIS MOM WAS IN JAIL.CAN ANYONE EVEN BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND HOW HE FELT? DOES ANYONE EVEN CARE?

You should do a followup interview now that she's resigned, been arrested and indicted by the FEDS.

In the past 20 years, we have never had a problem with items missing from mail that we have sent from or received at the New Ellenton post office (we have a PO box there). However, we have had mail taken from the box on the street in front of our home. Since we live on a dirt road, we can readily see the tracks of footprints to and from our box -- definitely not from the postal delivery person (who delivers from their truck)!

She's always been a nosey one, that's why she worked for the post office. She liked to get into other people's business.

WHY DID THEY BREAK UP - WHO WAS RUNNING AROUND IN NEW ELLENTON? WE HEARD SHE OPENED MAIL FROM HER EX-HUSBAND TO SEE WHO WAS SENDING HIM SWEET LETTERS AND CARDS.

We're going to miss Denise at the post office. Mark is known to be very vindictive.

granny always said, "you can always get some cookies from the jar but sooner or later you'll get caught with your hands in the jar." grandpa always mentioned about people "having their backside caught in a wringer" i think the augusta chronicles comments here on this page should let the denise lovers try and grasp reality. 2 month investigation huh? sounds as if the federal boys aren't playing around if it's already in the u.s. attorneys office in columbia. it's just a matter of time until you denise fans see the light. she might have you all fooled, but remember what granny and grandpa said...oh and again, read the augusta chronicle comment here on this page.

First Mark Key resigns from the city council and now Denise Key resigns from the post office. If she opened someone elss's mail and made an omission, then that's a federal crime.

U.S. Attorney's Office gets mail-theft case. The Office of the Inspector General has turned over its investigation of an employee at the New Ellenton post office to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Columbia. Agapi Doulaveris, a spokeswoman for the inspector general's office, confirmed that postal worker Denise Key, 43, has been under investigation for mail theft-related charges for a couple of months. Federal agents launched the investigation when they began receiving complaints about the New Ellenton post office from customers, she said. "We do consider the theft of mail to be a serious criminal matter," Ms. Doulaveris said, and "we're awaiting the next step in the prosecution process."

Posted by: Diane Location: New Ellenton on Dec 17, 2007 at 01:12 PM
Denise, you've delivered my mail for the past 9 1/2 years and not once did I have a problem in receiving my mail. The only thing you did differently than the other mail carriers is to get my mail to me at a reasonable time. As long as you were driving I had mail by 1200; the other driver gets my mail to me around 1730. I will miss your smiling face in the post office and hope that all turns out well for youl and your family. As far as being the talk of the town, fortunately, my group of friends hasn't even mentioned any of this. Maybe we're slow. No matter what I can't believe that a good Christian woman, mother, grandmother and friend would go to the lengths of which you are being accused. You should continue to hold your head high and pridefully announce your innocence. I open my husbands mail-- I open my sons mail-- and I'm sure when she starts getting mail, I'll open my daughters mail. I believe that our problems begin with the contract drivers--- NOT WITH DENISE KEY.

Santa knows when you've been bad or good, so you better watch out. He's going to be checking a little closer under Ms. Grinch's tree this year!!!

Denise admits that she invaded the privacy of others by opening their mail clearly in violation of federal law. What does Bob say about her misconduct?

Posted by: Politics Location: New Ellenton on Dec 16, 2007 at 03:10 PM
Isn't Denise Key's ex-husband a member of the New Ellenton City Council? More than likely this is nothing but small town politics and a vindictive accusation.

For over a year, I have not been able to send pictures, gift cards, money, or letters without the strong possibility it would be stolen. The resigned postal carrier stole money from my grandchildren and my children. She has stolen memories I wished to share with my loved ones. She has cost me more money since I had to start sending mail certified. I cannot believe how many items my grandchildren did not receive. IF they received a card, the contents were missing, the card arrived extremely late and it was opened. It was unbelievable the percentage of the number of pieces of mail that were never delivered. She also stole a check my parents sent my grandchildren and the gift card my daughter sent her nephew. She IS a Christmas grinch and she has to be stopped. It is a felony and she has hurt our family tremendously. She stole from my grandchildren and she saw those cards were for little kids. How pathetic!

First off, I am not interested in being on t.v. This is the only forum I have been on and leave no contact information. I have lived in various parts of the United States and across the world. I have had cash sent to me on birthdays out of habit by loved ones. I have alsways received it until I moved to New Ellenton. This summer of the NINE verifibale birthday cards sent to me, only THREE arrived, one of which was blatantly opened by human and not machine hands. The issue is not with Augusta but is a route issue. Only two people had anything to do with my route and one was Denise Key. I am sorry to her fmaily members but she is lying to them as she did to me on two occasions. She has stolen money from my mother, sister, brother, grandparents, mother-in-law. I am certain that when the evidence is available, there will be no Bush conspiracies, only Denise's desperate actions to blame. She had many opportunties to stop but did not. There were deputies present at the interrog.

good luck to her. I would not resign. She is probably innocent. The union will help her i'm sure. After she is found innocent i hope OIG investigators are held responsible.

Posted by: wow Location: pacific northwest on Dec 14, 2007 at 06:59 PM
I am so sorry that your family has to go through this. It is perfectly okay to take lunch at home and also to take a potty break at home. Why not go closer to your route than drive all over town? If she was doing something they should have checked her home as she was allowing them to do. What is unethical about opening your own mail? I could see if the mail did not have her address on it. Please don't judge her until all of the facts are out. Would YOU want to be judged before all of the facts are out. The OIG has been wrong before. They don't understand the mail system like Postal Inspectors do. They were probably hired so Bush could open our mail so how hypocritical is that!!?? Let justice prevail!

Posted by: Terry Location: usa on Dec 14, 2007 at 06:44 PM
Edward, It is not illegal to have lunch at your home, if it's located on your route, and designated spot. Many carriers bid on routes to save lunch expenses, change clothes due to change weather. The vechicle must be locked as in anywhere they park, mail secure.

Posted by: KAYLA Location: AIKEN on Dec 14, 2007 at 05:07 PM
DENISE KEY IS MY AUNT.SHE IS AS SWEET AS CAN BE.i KNOW HER AND SHE WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING BAD.JUST GIVE HER A BREAK. SHES BEEN THROUGH A TOUGH TIME BECAUSE OF PERSONAL PROBLEMS IN HER LIFE. SHE WOULD NOT STEAL ANYTHING. SHE ONLY OPENED HER EXHUSBANDS AND HER SONS MAIL...no one elses mail!!!

Posted by: JENNIFER Location: AIKEN on Dec 14, 2007 at 04:22 PM
I AM THE PROUD MOTHER OF DENISE KEY. BELIEVE ME, SHE IS INNOCENT.TO THE PERSON WHO WANTED TO KNOW WHAT RACE SHE IS, SHE, IS CAUCASION. DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERANCE WHAT RACE SHE IS? SHE IS VERY BEAUTIFUL, INSIDE AS WELL AS OUTSIDE, AND, I DONT KNOW WHY HER PICTURE HAS NOT BEEN SHOWN.PLEASE, ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT ARE TALKING ABOUT HER, GIVE HER A BREAK. SHE IS VERY HURT BY THE GOSSIP AND RUMORS THAT SEEM TO BE COMING FROM PEOPLE WHO JUST WANT TO GET THIER NAME AND PICTURE ON T.V.HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE BEHIND HER 100 PERCENT.

Posted by: CID on Dec 14, 2007 at 03:40 PM
She admitted that she acted unethically. She shoud be fired! Do not accept a resignation, FIRE this crook!

Posted by: edward Location: new ellenton on Dec 14, 2007 at 02:54 PM
conviction rate for federal crimes is 94%. the other 6% is tossed out of court. the feds don't step up to the plate until they have an airtight case. the accused in this case is boasting of retirement when in fact it is a 1st step forced resignation. countless times her mail truck could be seen at her residence during postal hours for so called lunch or potty breaks. the other mail carriers would take breaks at town establishments. just was wondering is it legal to have a loaded mail truck at your residence during business hours. never mind going through mail at the post office if you have access to folks mail at your house during lunch. i don't know postal rules but this seems like it's not fair not to say wrong. the laws of our land say we're innocent until proven guilty which is a marvelous thing. but if the feds build a case and can prove her guilty beyond reasonable doubt, she should fall into the 94 percentile. the feds will be in no hurry for this. remember she's innocent until.

Posted by: Mike Location: Aiken on Dec 14, 2007 at 02:42 PM
Maybe the Postal Service needs to check out the contract drivers who transport the mail to the different offices and why aren't the trucks sealed with a USPS numbered locking seal?

Denise: Never resign unless you are charged. They may be looking for a scapegoat.

Posted by: Donna Location: South Alabama on Dec 14, 2007 at 12:11 PM
As an employee of the USPS,it is a shame that people are accusing this employee without knowing all the facts. First of all the ones who are saying she has been doing this for a long time really do not know whether she is innocent or guilty. As an employee for 22 years, I see the mail come into the office in all kinds of torn conditions. Our machines will tear letters up if there is a jam or something inside the letter. And yes there are thieves here as well as anywhere else. But people who are stupid enough to put cash in an envelope and mail it with crime the way it is today, has no right to make false accusations. We see plenty of letters that have been taken out of peoples mailboxes and the contents removed by persons who should never have touched the mail. If Denise is guilty, then I hope that she is convicted but if she isn't, I would hope that her accusers would apologize for their narrow minded views.

I have akways heard a "That the GUILT DOG WILL BARK "

Posted by: OIG Location: Georgia on Dec 14, 2007 at 06:37 AM
Any one who works for the post office should assume she is innocent first. We know what it is like inside the PO. I'm sure the OIG will cover this up after they foul up the inv estigation

Posted by: wow Location: pacific northwest on Dec 14, 2007 at 01:57 AM
I am so sorry this has happened to you Denise. It appears that you have been convicted before you even received a trial. Where is the evidence? Hang in there. Some people can really be hurtful when they don't know the facts. They don't realize that the same thing could happen to them. If you are innocent...you are innocent. When they are done their investigation, will you get back pay? Will the accusers come here and apologize for falsely accusing you... I hope so...justice is really being stomped on around here

I am the one you are talking about. Until you work inside a Post Office and see how mail comes into an office you should not speak. I have also had cash lost in the mail within the last couple of years do you think I would take my own money. I just know better then to send cash anymore. Mail would come in our office and other offices they have brought to New Ellenton that had been opened and something missingso ask yourself how could I be in Aiken and New Ellenton at the same time

The reason Ms. Key hasn't been charged yet is that she committed a federal crime and it takes time for the charges to be presented in court. My entire family has been a victim of her crimes over the past year. It is unfortunate that she made the decisions she did, but she definitely must be made accountable for her actions. She should stop pointing fingers at innocent people becuase she knows she is to blame.
