Mother accused of stabbing her two young children to death

AUGUSTA, GA---22-year-old Jeanette Michelle Hawes is in jail, accused of stabbing and killing her two young children inside an Augusta convenience store bathroom.

One-year-old Jordon Hawes and three-year-old Shakayla Hawes were transported to MCG, where they were pronounced dead.

Jeanette Hawes is charged with two counts of murder and with possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

The stabbing happened inside the bathroom of the Patee Gas Station convenience store at the intersection of Lumpkin Rd. and Richmond Hill Rd. Sgt. Richard Roundtree tells News 12 the clerk told deputies there was a problem with the customers inside the restroom.

The deputies pried the door open and found Hawes and the children lying on the floor. The children had suffered several stab wounds to the chest. Hawes had a black steak knife and was covered in the children's blood.

Jeanette Hawes is currently in the Richmond County Jail.

A memorial fund for Shakayla and Jordon Hawes is expected to be up and running by Tuesday. It is being established by News Radio 1230 WNRR.
