Voices & Vibes: Parents should take precaution before purchasing holiday gaming titles

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Every year, parents undergo the stress and fast-paced shopping for their children.

However, parents often overlook the importance of one factor when it comes to purchasing the number one thing on their child's wishlist: video game content.

Some of this year's biggest titles scheduled for a November and December release are Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, Legend of Zelda, Skyward Sword, Batman: Arkham City, Skyriam, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Uncharted 3, Saints Row The Third, among other titles. The similarities among some of these titles are their ratings given by the Entertainment and Software Rating Board (ESRB) and the content in these games.

Parents should pay close attention to the content of games that are rated T for Teen and M for Mature. While some games may share either an M or a T rating, the content of each game varies as far as the amount of violence, profanity, nudity and even illicit drug use. Some titles have either one or two of these variables during game play but still gain a mature rating.

Gamers and gaming store personnel recommend that parents research the titles on their children's gift list to make sure that they are comfortable with what the content may be exposing their children to.
