AUGUSTA, Ga. -- It is almost Christmas time and several organizations around the CSRA are ready to help local families enjoy a happy holiday with this year's Christmas Clearinghouse.

Some of the nonprofit organizations that are accepting applications for the toy giveaway are the Aiken and Augusta Salvation Army, Action Ministries of Augusta, the New Bethlehem Community Center and other centers throughout Burke and McDuffie counties.

Rick Herring, director of Action Ministries in Augusta, says they have managed to assist around 800 families in the area and estimates that 850 families will be helped this year. President of the United Way of Augusta La Verne H. Gold said that a total of 16,348 people were assisted with this program.

With the state of the economy in the past few years, more families have applied for this program.

Local businesses, churches and other families have contributed to this program, and those who want to apply can do so until Dec. 10.
