Runners endure early fall weather for good cause

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Nearly 200 people laced up their running shoes for the sixth annual Boshears Memorial Ground Loop in Augusta on Saturday.

"This is our sixth year, and we've been very blessed to have a dedicated group of community volunteers," said Kam Kyzer, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of the CSRA.

The event was held by the Boys and Girls Club of the CSRA, and the goal was to raise money to help at-risk youth adhere to grade progression in school.

"When I saw that this 5K was to benefit them, I definitely wanted to sign up and participate," said Ann Starkey, a runner and teacher at Martinez Elementary.

"It's not only for my enjoyment or just practice for me, but I'm helping others," said 11-year-old Sloan Wylds Jr.

Organizers say this event also promotes physical activity and community involvement.

"We promote healthy lifestyles, so that we're getting kids and folks in the community active," Kyzer said. "It's a way to show kids how to get involved as well."

The fall weather and Central Avenue's sloping terrain brought out the best in the runners.

"That hill and the wind and it being somewhat chilly out here made it difficult, but it wasn't too bad," Starkey said.

Through the sweat and the pain, the Boys and Girls Club was able to raise almost $10,000.

"The Boys and Girls Club is one of many organizations that are doing a great service to our community, and we all need to come out and support," said Wayne Richardson.

This year's run kicks off the 2012 Boshear Skyfest that will take place on Oct. 20 in Augusta.
