Golfers raise money for Aiken Relay For Life

AIKEN, S.C. -- The 6th Annual Relay For Life Aiken Golf Classic took a big swing at fighting cancer this year.

"It's satisfying to see this grow and to be able to raise so much money for a cause and to have a whole community get together," said Jack St. Clair, co-founder of the Aiken Golf Classic.

Golfers representing 35 organizations gathered at the Woodsie Reserve Course for their own version of the Masters.

"URS has always been a community sponsor in variety of communities that it's in," said Senior Vice President for URS Jimmy Angelos. "This is a worthy cause and cancer does touch everybody, and we want to be a part of trying to provide a solution for that."

Volunteers and players took part in the tournament after some battled with a form of cancer or were affected by the disease in some way.

"I've always been aware of cancer and the people that it takes," said Bill Blosser co-chair of the tournament and cancer survivor. "But when it hits home, then it gets more personal."

Organizers felt that golf was the best way to unite a community for a worthy cause, and with over 180 golfers teeing off on the courses, they were right.

"Golf is such an important part of our lives here. Putting golf and putting a program where we can benefit cancer is a marriage made in Heaven," said Barry Sroka, volunteer coordinator of the event.

Throughout the six years of this tournament, the Aiken Relay For Life was able to achieve over $38,000 in contributions from the local community.

"When this tournament started, we raised $7,000. It's because of the support of the people in the CSRA area," said Blosser.

This year's classic was a hole-in-one in the fight against cancer.
