AUGUSTA -- He inspires children to have the courage to be themselves -- while sagging his pants.
"Oliver Vance Pull Up Your Pants" is a new children's book by Maurice McBride-Owens, a business professor at Voorhees College, and Jessica Wallace.
Illustrated by Anthony B. Jackson, Oliver is a boy who wants to fit in with his peers. In the story, Oliver sees the other boys wearing their pants below their waists and decides to do the same. He then realizes the problems that accompany his new image.
McBride's goal is to address the fads and mainstream perceptions that children tend to follow without knowledge of the meanings or consequences.
The Oliver Vance Project has reached out to churches, public schools and other events around the Southeast region. McBride said that Oliver is willing to travel to any event to talk to children.
While only a character in a book, McBride and his coworkers plan to bring Oliver to life with a cartoon, a series of books and a music video to the Oliver Vance Dance.
McBride hopes to have an impact on children with the Oliver Vance Project, so that future generations will feel comfortable with themselves.
Oliver has two different pages on Facebook that can be liked or added to stay updated on his whereabouts in the community.
Oliver wants to visit a school or event near you. For more information on Oliver Vance visit his website or call 1(800)-790-7576.
