NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- In many ways, Donna Joyner is a typical realtor -- always on the go and always on the phone.

Joyner lives in a busy world of buyers and sellers and homes. Time is money, and if she misses a call, she could miss a sale.

Enter the Hawkins family -- DeWayne; his wife, Brittany; and their son, Laiden.

DeWayne got hurt on the job and couldn't work. They were running out of money and out of hope when a woman who makes her living with homes opened up her own home to them.

"I can't explain it," Joyner said. "There was just so much potential there for him to do so well -- he just needed a shot. He just needed someone to tell him what his value was, what his worth was, what his capabilities were."

Brittany Hawkins nominated Joyner for the January Time To Care Award.

"And she took us in and helped us realize that we could do it. And we were gonna do it. And that she would be there the whole way to help us," Hawkins told News 12.

The young couple took full advantage, registering at Augusta Tech, earning their GEDs and eventually moving back into their own place.

"I've just seen them believe in themselves," Joyner said. "I think is the biggest change. That they started to see in themselves what we all saw in them."

Hawkins says her motivation was as close as her little boy. She didn't want him to see her as a failure.

"And now I can teach my son that even if something rough comes to your life, you can always do better for yourself," she said.

Joyner says there's a lesson here for all of us. No matter how busy we are -- even if time is money in your profession.

"Make time. No matter what, there is something in your day you can give up. And you need it. I need to know that I'm doing something," Joyner said. "I feel like when God puts us in a position to meet people that are in need and we have a need we can meet, we're blessed. We have to do it."

Her buyers and sellers usually understand -- even if it means she might miss a possible home showing while she's doing something to help others.

"They're gonna wait for you," Joyner said firmly. "And if they don't, God's gonna immediately replace them with another buyer or seller. It's just how he works. He doesn't let us not help others."

Hawkins says she nominated Joyner for the award because she just wanted everyone to know how much of a difference this Time To Care Award winner made in the lives of her young family.
