AUGUSTA---You've never seen anything like Friday afternoon after school at Augusta's Olmstead Homes.

Marietta Lee Conner guides children through the Pledge of Allegiance and invites them to introduce themselves loud and proud.

Actually, her full name is the Rev. Elder Dr. Marietta Lee Conner. She's a disabled Army veteran. Every week, she provides snacks for dozens of children in her neighborhood. They provide her with what they've learned, like their ABC's.

And they know the rules: pants up, shoes tied, looking good. If not, a few pushups as a reminder, or even jumping jacks. School lessons turn into life lessons.

"Just because you get out of school, school doesn't stop," Marietta says. "It's a consistent effort--how to dress for a job."

She's been doing this for nearly 30 years. Once-small children like the ones we saw working with her today are now responsible adults. However, her mission is much more than just candy or crackers.

"If you don't put nothin' in, you don't get nothin' out," Marietta says.

On behalf of our Time to Care partners, Academy Sports and Outdoors, Ashley Furniture HomeStore, Subway and Troy University, News 12 was proud to present Marietta with our Time to Care Award for what she does for those young people. Marietta is a woman who's truly making a difference in our world, one child at a time, and she does it all out of her own pocket.
