May Time to Care Winner: Virgil Wilkerson

AUGUSTA, Ga.---What do you call a man who is well beyond retirement age, but continues to give and give? He gives the most valuable gift any of us really have: his time.

His name is Virgil Wilkerson and he's our Time to Care winner for May.

We surprised Virgil at a place he loves very much, the Church of Christ on Old Petersburg Road in Augusta. He's not just a member here, he's a full time volunteer.

Virgil tells us, "I've been doing it since I became a member in November 1978."

You'll find him here every week, doing all sorts of odd jobs. If there's a light out in the sanctuary, Virgil doesn't mind reaching toward heaven to fix it. And when the grass or bushes need need a trim- Virgil takes care of that too.

Virgil's daughter Vicky says that's his gift.

"He's just a wonderful man", she says. "He works at the Burn Unit at the hospital. There's just no end to what he can do and does do for people."

On the day we met him, Virgil was checking out an air hockey table his family just donated to the church's youth department. But most of the time, you'll find Virgil stocking the church's food pantry. Meeting people's needs is his passion.

"No matter whether it's Richmond County, Columbia County. To serve people in need, low income, no income, when they come here we do our best to meet their needs," Virgil told us.

This retired Army drill sergeant and former employee at Augusta Regional Airport says you may change careers- but you never really retire.

"I guess when I get to the year 80, I might turn it over to somebody else. And that's right around the corner."

You see, Virgil is a doer. He takes the words on the altar seriously. Important words. 'This Do In Rememberance Of Me'.

"It makes me feel good. I don't want the credit, believe me. It's something that helps me get to know God better. Much better."

And there's one more thing Virgil is passionate about. It's his 1969 VW Bug. He bought it new and it just hit 300 thousand miles. Hard to say which he loves the most, the Bug or 'Bama.

As the old engine roars to life, Virgil looks out the window with a grin and a shout.

"Roll Tide!"

Virgil actually turns 77 later this month. He told me he just loves being active. Yard work, golf, water skiing, you name it.

And of course, we want to thank our Time to Care partners who make this award possible, Subway, The Taylor Auto Group and Troy University.
