Children's Miracle Network funds made this playground possible. It's a relief to miracle kids going through treatment at MCGHealth Children's Medical Center. (WRDW-TV)
Your contributions are visible all around the MCGHealth Children's Medical Center.
One of them, a four-floor playground, is an oasis for children receiving all levels of treatment. It allows kids to get out of the hospital room and gives them a fun, safe place to explore.
Two-year-old Addison could hardly contain her excitement. She has free rein of the indoor playground. For her dad Ronnie, it's a welcome break from another stressful day of treatments. This time it's pneumonia, and her recovery is going well. But Addison is no stranger to the MCGHealth Children's Medical Center.
"She was born here," Ronnie told News 12. "She was actually 14 weeks premature. Weighed two pounds three ounces at birth. We spent a total of about 180 days in the neonatal intensive care unit."
The equipment Addison plays on, even the special medical wrist band she wears, are all paid for with Children's Miracle Network funds. Jim Munford, one of the hospital administrators, says the Children's Miracle Network helps to support everything from the small things that Addison enjoys to major hospital renovations.
"It gives us a little bit of an opportunity to provide things that normally would be tough to get through capital or through the normal operations of the hospital," Munford said.
Even the warm blankets babies receive for comfort in intensive care are projects of the Children's Miracle Network.
"It is a lifeblood for us in pediatrics," Munford said. "With funding down for children's health care, things like the programs, there's not a lot of money, especially when you're running about 60 percent Medicaid. There's not a lot of extra money. So that really helps us to be able to provide programs, equipment, things that otherwise we'd have to wait a lifetime for."
The busy emergency room and the peaceful playground are each supported by this network of giving. These are real-life, local examples of your donations in action. Your contribution to the Children's Miracle Network not only provides critical technology, but a little fun for the soul, too.
