Augusta, GA-- Avery Hardy is a 7-year-old that has been through more than many of us will in a lifetime.
When she was just a year old she had to spend weeks at Children's Hospital of Georgia because of a rare auto immune disease that blinded her in the right eye and gave her constant seizures.
Doctors removed the right side of her brain and she spent months going through occupational and speech therapy.
Years later and Avery is now a healthy and happy girl. Mother Melissa Hardy says joining the Race to 50k is their way to give back.
"They've helped us so much," Melissa said. "They gave us our daughter because we thought she was going to die the day before her first birthday and now she's seven. They gave us our daughter back and it's one way we can give back to them because we never once expected we would have to utilize a hospital for our children."
Melissa says throughout all of the surgeries and therapy the doctors at the hospital made it feel like home away from home.
