Week 9 high school football thoughts

Here are some thoughts from week 9 of the high school football season.

First and foremost Burke County is a very, very good team. They go on the road to Sandersville and knock off Washington County. Now this is a game that could have gone either way but the Bears took advantage of mistakes and cashed in when need be. That win pretty much locks up the #1 seed in the region playoffs so they'll be sitting good for the first few rounds of the playoffs not having to venture out of Waynesboro.

Lincoln County again proves just how good they are with a convincing win over Aquinas. When I rolled up to Aquinas High School I was more then impressed with the turnout. I mean there were cars all over Highland Ave and every side street near by. Easily one of, if not the biggest crowd ever to see a game there. But in the end it was the Red Devils not making mistakes and making Aquinas pay for every turnover they committed. The Irish are getting there, but they haven't reached the elite level yet. Franklin Sherman has proved to be a big time quarterback and they can make another deep run into the playoffs.

Congrats again to Bamberg Ehrhardt. I know we don't cover them much, but the Raiders add yet another region title to their impressive collection with a shutout of Allendale Fairfax. They, along with Williston Elko could easily make it to Orangeburg and the Class A state finals.

Now the tough luck award will likely go to Butler. Despite a great year and despite the improvement the program has made by leaps and bounds, there's a good chance they'll be odd man out in the playoffs. They need to somehow upset Burke County to grab that spot. Doesn't matter, Ashley Harden, you have my vote for coach of the year.

Here's how I voted in this week's News 12/Augusta Chronicle power poll.

1. Williston Elko

2. North Augusta

3. Lincoln County

4. Burke County

5. Silver Bluff

6. Jefferson County

7. Thomson

8. Washington County

9. Swainsboro

10. Bamberg Ehrhardt

I've had the Blue Devils #1 for three weeks now and it's not going to change. Lincoln County and Burke County are the big movers in my voting. Obviously I dropped Washington County, but they are still a very good team.
