Best win of the week...both Evans and Hephzibah. The Knights go on the road and beat a good Statesboro team and despite their scoring issues, now sit in the cat birds seat of winning the sub region. Knights are finding ways to win and that's what matters most. Meanwhile Hephzibah knocked off Butler in by far their top win of the year. Butler is a solid defensive team but the Rebels and Terry Robinson found a way to score early and hold on for the victory.
Toughest defeat by far goes to Midland Valley. The Mustangs were scratching and clawing for coach Rick Knight and scored late to force overtime. Then in the extra period, they block a field goal attempt and somehow AC Flora picked it up, ran the other way and scored the game winning touchdown. I really hope there are no lingering effects of that loss. But that's about a tough of a way to lose a game possible.
How about Williston Elko. In a battle of top two teams in the state, the Blue Devils struggled in the first half but put it all together and rolled in the final 24 minutes. That win alone could put the final stamp on what should be a state title team. This squad is loaded with talent and thus the odds on favorite.
Most enjoyable game to watch, other then the Williston game, the Josey -Grovetown match up had plenty of offensive fireworks. Touchdowns right and left and touchdowns all over the place. If you were just a fan, this may have been the most enjoyable game of the weekend.
Finally the top upcoming game is without a doubt Burke County traveling to Washington County. The irresistible force meets the unstopable object. The Bears are scoring tons of points while the Golden Hawks stop people in their tracks. A sub region title is at stake.
My News 12/Augusta Chronicle top 10
1. Williston Elko
2. Washington County
3. North Augusta
4. Silver Bluff
5. Lincoln County
6. Jefferson County
9. Burke County
I'm a big believer in the Blue Devils. The two losses early on by Burke has them fighting the uphill battle in my rankings. I'm not a big believer in dropping teams after wins. Lincoln County may stand the best chance of any Georgia school of going deep in the playoffs. Aquinas plays Lincoln County this week so that should be a dandy as well.
