Can hockey succeed in Augusta?

Will the RiverHawks succeed and have staying power in Augusta?

I think the question says it all. First and foremost, I'm from upstate New York and love hockey. But after the first two months of the season with the RiverHawks I'm not sure it will ever succeed in this town. Why is what I ask myself everyday and every time I go to a game.

I think first and foremost there's unnecessary animosity against the RiverHawks. Had the Augusta Lynx not folded mid season I think the attendance would be a different story. Too many true hockey fans lost money and now are taking it out against the new team. Obviously it's not fair but I do understand where they're coming from. Had the Lynx folded after the season, I think we'd be seeing 2000 plus in the seats, not the 1000 or so that are showing up right now. Say what you want, but the former owners of the Lynx lost well over $2 MILLION  !!! You can only operate a losing venture so long before pulling the plug.

For an area this size, there's no reason the RiverHawks shouldn't or couldn't draw 2500 to 3000 every single game. With a weekend dominated schedule and people looking for something to do, it's a good way to spend a couple of hours while being entertained. Are the tickets pricey? Well, how much do you spend to go to a movie? Same thing. Is it cold in the arena, it's hockey, what do you expect. Bring a jacket and you'll be fine. Parking, lots of it in the arena lot and near by. Price of refreshments, what you would expect at any minor league sport.

If things don't improve in the next two to three months the Augusta area may bid goodbye to yet another hockey team. This time it may be the last for quite some time. It's highly unlikely another owner would want to sink a lot of money into a franchise that won't be supported by the people.

I'm not saying run out and go to a game, but even if you're a curios fan, why not check it out. You'll enjoy the experience.
