In the last couple of days a lot has been made about umpire Jim Joyce and his bad call on what should have been the final out of Armondo Galarraga's perfect game. Guess what, he missed the call and he's HUMAN.

For all those ripping him for the call, take a step back and realize how difficult a job being an umpire is. Baseball is a sport played a break neck speed at times and you know what, they miss one every now and then. From all accounts from everyone, Jim Joyce is one of the best umpires in the business. Detroit Tiger manager Jim Leyland, while upset after the call, said it takes a big man to apologize in person for the missed call. Even Galarraga himself said it's all good.

On Thursday Joyce umpired behind home plate and when he came out from the locker room area, he was in tears. How many umpires have you every seen like that? Remember the line in the Tom Hanks movie "A League of their Own" ? "There's no crying in baseball!" Well, Joyce and others will tell you yes there is. Joyce showed a lot of compassion and should be applauded for not hiding and taking full responsibility. He was harder on himself then anyone ever could or should be.

It's real easy to criticize the guys who make the calls, but would you ever do it? Could you handle the heat that goes along with it? I have several friends that are umpires and believe me, it's not easy.

So instead of jumping on the bandwagon to run Jim Joyce out of baseball, give him a pat on the back for being a man and admitting to his mistake, the Tigers have. Guess, what, he's HUMAN, we all make mistakes!
