Playoff Thoughts

Here's some thoughts and observations from the first week of the playoffs.

It seems like over the years, the region featuring the metro teams takes a beating about being soft and not ready for the state playoffs. At times it was probably well deserved. Not anymore. No question Lakeside,ARC, Evans and Hephzibah were the class of the region and nearly went 4 and 0 this weekend. Lakeside's defense was again just a tick below spectacular, ARC continues to play inspired ball, Evans had Ware County on the ropes til late in the game, and Hephzibah only came up 10 points shy and could have won that game. Yea, they deserve some accolades this week.

Now going into week two on the Georgia side of things, I wouldn't be surprised if ARC and Lakeside win again. Will it be easy? No, but look how both those teams are playing! Chris Hughes has the Musketeers believing they can win every time they step on the field and Jody Grooms has put together a power this year and get another home date.

Jefferson County continues to win but now comes the hard part. The Warriors have never advanced past the second round and that's where we are. If they can get the monkey off their back this week, at home I might add, a deep run could happen.

Could we be headed for an ECI- Lincoln County showdown? Never know but I like the way both are playing and Larry Campbell has done wonders this year. Once AG Middlebrooks went down a lot of folks thought this team was in trouble. I'll admit it, me too. But with a defense that's really clamped down on things, they're good plain and simple.

Finally in Georgia, a shout out to all the Independent Schools. Briarwood, Thomas Jefferson, Brentwood, and Edmund Burke all winners. We could have a title team from the group.

Over in South Carolina, big shock, North Augusta looked good. I really think they're playing with a chip on their shoulder after getting a five seed. Yea, they have to hit the road this week, but this team has loads of talent plain and simple.

Strom Thurmond moves on while Silver Bluff falls. So much for hoping for that rematch in the state finals. The Bulldogs have struggled in the second round and that trend unfortunately continues, even on home turf.

Williston Elko wins big. Where have we heard that before? H-K-T was much improved from when they played in the regular season, but the Blue Devils have way too many weapons.

Finally, congrats to Wardlaw Academy. Back to back undefeated seasons and state titles. Stephen Balentine throws for nearly 500 yards and 10 touchdowns! I thought you could only do that on video games. 70 points in a title game!! Wow!!
