Week 7 High School football thoughts

Here are some of my thoughts following week 7 of the season.

Hard to believe it's time for the stretch drive for area football teams with the playoffs quickly approaching. Let's start with the game of the year, part two. After a thrilling Lakeside- Hephzibah last week, how bout the Irmo-North Augusta game this past Friday? Wow. Two top notch programs playing in possibly the biggest game in the state. While North Augusta came out on the short end of the score, it might not hurt the Jackets in the long run. If anything, they learned more then ever to take care of the ball. I highly doubt a turnover will directly cost them in the last few weeks of the season like it did. This team is too good with to much talent to slow them down.

Jefferson County is probably now the top team in the area. I know it's tough to knock North Augusta and even Burke County off that perch, but the Warriors and JB Arnold have everything pointed in the right direction. They're also proving they are much more then Barry Bostic. You don't win consistently by blowing people out by having a one man team.

My surprise of the week may have been Thomson giving Washington County a run for their money. I thought for sure the Hawks would lay out the Bulldogs like they have just about everyone else. Luther Welsh is struggling to find some consistency with the Dogs but they find a way. By the way, maybe Washington County is the best in the area.

How things change, how things stay the same. Many folks thought this was the week Butler would finally get that elusive win. Nope, not happening. Josey squashed that thought early. The Bulldogs did show some character in the second half but the result was the same. As someone famous once said...wait til next year!

Top teams in no particular order....Jefferson County, Washington County, North Augusta, Williston Elko, Burke County, Hephzibah, Lakeside and Swainsboro.

While I can't group them in there, Edmund Burke and Wardlaw are right there as far as being contenders for state titles in the independent and 8-man ranks. Going to be a fun final few weeks of the year.
