Week 6 High School Football Thoughts

Here's my take on week six of the high school football season.

Hard to believe we are now pretty much half way through the high school football season. Time does fly when you're having fun.

Right now one team that's having lost of fun is Hephzibah. The Rebels prove they're for real with a win over Lakeside. The defense again rises to the occasion and gets the stop when needed. But hats off to the Panthers who took a chance and rolled the dice and went for the win in overtime. Jody Grooms has turned the Panthers into a big time player and a tip of the cap for him for going for the victory. Both could pose serious problems for ARC in the upcoming weeks. Matter of fact, Lakeside heads to the Academy Friday.

O-K, I am now a believer in Lincoln County. You would think I would have learned by now to never count out a Larry Campbell team but with mostly underclassmen and then the star player getting hurt, this team easily could have gone the other direction. Nope, instead they had plenty of new faces step up and get the job done in place of AG Middlebrooks. It was a solid effort in a dominating win on a team on the rise in Aquinas.

Don't be alarmed about Burke County losing to Baldwin. Baldwin is a traditional power and made plays when need be. I still think the Bears are on a short list of best teams in the area. While talking about Waynesboro, Edmund Burke does it again. The Spartans are still undefeated.

It was without a doubt a weird schedule in South Carolina with only a few area schools at home. North Augusta goes on the road and comes up big. That sets up a showdown with Irmo this Friday at the home of the Yellow Jackets. Strom Thurmond is back on track and stopped a two point conversion as well to win their ballgame.

I must admit I'm not really sure what's going on at Wagener Salley but hopefully they'll get things straightened out. To make a coaching change mid season is a tell tale sign they had lots of issues to deal with off the field. It's too bad seeing this is high school football we're talking about. Not big time college or the pros where winning can be everything. Hopefully they'll get it all squared away in the very near future, I hate to see any team lose.

Alright, top teams in the area in no particular order. North Augusta, Williston Elko, Jefferson County, Washington County, Hephzibah, ARC, Evans.

Most interesting games of the upcoming week: Irmo @ North Augusta for obvious reasons. Same with Lakeside @ ARC. Wagener Salley @ Fox Creek, someone has to win. Butler @ Josey on Saturday. This could be the game the losing streak ends!
