Saving some dough on bread

Tucked away in North Augusta is a little shop called Colonial Bakery Store at

1811 Knox Avenue
.  I drive past it every day and today decided to go check it out.  Everyone needs to check it out!  Not only are there good bargains, but the woman working there was so nice!

It’s a “thrift shop” for not only bread products but cereals, snacks, cakes, fruits – a lot of different items.  Colonial is now owned by Sara Lee and the bread products in the store are Sara Lee and Sunbeam, both well-known brands.  Their “day old” bread is just that – a day old – and sells for $.99 a loaf for white and $1.19 for wheat.

Breakfast bars, similar to the Nutri-Grain bars, sell for $1.29 a box, hamburg rolls (Sara Lee) were $.89 and bagels were $.99.  They also had Chex mix, pound cakes, sweet rolls, boxed cereals and canned fruits.

We buy bread on sale and freeze it.  When you’re ready to use it, put it in the refrigerator to thaw and it keeps it from getting soggy.  There’s another on in Augusta at

1527 Wrightsboro Road
.  It’s also a Sara Lee shop, but it’s called Earth Grains Company.

Both stores are open from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.  And after talking on the phone with the Earth Grains store, both have very pleasant staff!  So, go check them out.

For those of you that don't live in Augusta, don't fret.  I did some random checking and these stores are scattered about the country.  Here are some examples:

Atlanta, GA:    Colonial Bakery Store - 530 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. SW #D

Rossville, TN:   Colonial Bakery Store - 1786 Mack Smith Road

Dothan, AL:  Colonial Bakery Store - 1924 Reeves Street
