AUGUSTA, Ga. -- It may feel like summer, but we are only in the first week of spring and that means it is time for some spring cleaning.
One of the top things homeowners put on their spring cleaning list is windows.
Dirty windows are an eyesore and can cause long-term damage to your home. Windows are porous and minerals from Mother Nature can absorb into the pores of the glass and stain in permanently.
You should try to clean your windows twice a year -- ideally in the spring and fall. Homes in wooded areas or near construction need it even more.
Most glass can be cleaned with soap, water and a squeegee. If you do decide to hire someone, make sure the company is insured and get an estimate.
"Cost are determined by an on-site estimate. We walk around the house, determine how many upper and lower windows, how hard they are going to be to access, maybe the second and even third floor windows on the house, and then the actual type of window and how the framing of it is in a house -- all those go into determine what the final cost will be," said Matt Swales, who works at a window cleaning company.
Another thing to consider if you are trying to save dollars is to clean the lower windows yourself and leave the hard-to-reach ones for the professional.
