Angie's List: Finding the right moving company

Thursday, March 30, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Moving season begins when children get out of school, so the peak is just around the corner.

Although moving can be exciting, it can also be very stressful.

The Better Business Bureau received thousands of complaints about movers each year. And in an Angie's List poll, about 40 percent of folks say they've had problems with their movers. That's why it's essential to do your research.

Check out their credentials and ask for proof of insurance. Also, don't go with the first person you find -- get at least three estimates.

And if you're watching your pennies, you've got to get organized.

"The number one cost-saving thing is to be organized," said an Angie's List representative. "Decide what you want to move. Some people, they will go ahead and clear everything out and that is really the way to do it. There's no reason to pay us to come in to move things you're not sure or don't want."

If you notice a box is damaged, open it in the mover's presence and have them confirm the condition. You may also want to note any damage on the inventory sheet.

Get everything in writing. There are all sorts of fees a moving company can slap you with, and you don't want an ugly surprise before unpacking.
