AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Car trouble is a headache nobody wants to encounter, so when your vehicle demands immediate attention, you want to leave your keys with a company you can trust.

Doing your homework and developing a long-term relationship with a mechanic will help you avoid being rushed into a last-minute decision.

When shopping for a mechanic, make sure they are licensed. Certified mechanics must have at least two years of experience and have passed an exam.

Also get an estimate in writing before authorizing repairs and don't be afraid to seek a second opinion.

"When you are having auto work done, a second opinion is a great investment," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

Keep in mind that a warranty may require you to use a specific dealership or shop.

If you use another source, keep all receipts in case your warranty coverage is questioned.

Finally, after the repairs are finished, get a complete repair order that describes the work that was done. Also ask to see any old parts -- some mechanics are required to return those to you.
